USC football has finally landed its impact defensive lineman.

The Trojans landed a massive, massive commitment from former five-star defensive lineman and Texas A&M edge rusher transfer Anthony Lucas on Wednesday. Lucas, an Arizona native, committed to the Trojans off a visit over the weekend. USC also announced that Lucas has officially signed with the program.

“Can’t go wrong,” Lucas told 247Sports Blair Angulo of his commitment. “Academics, championship opportunity, as well as an opportunity to play and make an impact, USC has everything.”

Lucas is by far the biggest portal pickup for USC in terms of potential, a much-needed infusion of talent for a Trojans defense that struggled up front throughout the season. USC’s defense is also losing the nation’s sack leader Tuli Tuipulotu, who declared for the 2023 NFL Draft earlier this month. He is the second defensive line addition over the last 24 hours for the Trojans after adding Purdue defensive lineman Jack Sullivan on Sunday night.

The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Lucas comes to the Trojans with limited playing experience, just seven games appearances this past season with 10 total tackles, one tackle for a loss and one quarterback hit. Lucas did not play the rest of the season due to a suspension along with three other freshmen due to a locker room incident after Texas A&M’s loss to

Given his size and athleticism, Lucas could play several positions along USC’s defensive front next season, similar to how the defensive deployed Tuipulotu.

Lucas is the third defensive line addition out of the portal along with Arizona defensive line starter Kyon Barrs and Sullivan. Overall, Lucas is the 11th transfer pickup along with offensive lineman Michael Tarquin (Florida), offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston (Washington State), running back MarShawn Lloyd (South Carolina), linebacker Mason Cobb (Oklahoma State), receiver Dorian Singer (Arizona), punter Eddie Czaplicki (Arizona) State), Barrs (Arizona), Sullivan (Purdue), cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace (Arizona) and linebacker Jamil Muhammad (Georgia State).

Lucas was a five-star prospect in the 247Sports rankings, the No. 32 overall prospect and the No. 10 defensive linemen. He chose the Aggies over offers from just about every major college football program, including Alabama, Notre Dame, Georgia, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma. In his senior season he recorded 64 tackles with 22 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks in 13 games.

He will be the second former five-star recruit on USC’s defense next season along with former No. 1 overall prospect Korey Foreman. In addition to the three transfer pickups, USC also signed three three-star defensive line prospects in 2023: Sam Greene (Baltimore), Elijah Hughes (Virginia) and Deijon Laffitte (California).

247Sports High School Evaluation:

Big and hulking frame with plus-plus length. Built through his lower half and carries 300 lbs. very well. A physical force at the line of scrimmage and has the prototypical size of an elite line prospect. Quick and agile out of his stance. Shows great burst to instantly put tackles on their heels. He displays crafty handwork to keep blockers at a distance. He flashes consistent engine and maintains forward momentum to pressure quarterbacks off the edge. He demonstrates tremendous footwork out of his three-point stance while keeping a low pad level. In run support, he shows patience to hold his ground, seal blocks and remain gap conscious. He displays great bend and wiggle in pass-rush situations. Supreme mobility, athleticism and flexibility clearly evident and moves remarkably well for his size. Unquestionably one of the nation’s best interior defensive line prospects and should be an immediate impact candidate at elite Power Five program.
