North Carolina made the trek home from Charlottesville early Wednesday morning in what has become a customary manner, saddled with its fourth road loss of the season and its eighth-consecutive defeat at John Paul Jones Arena. UNC is past the halfway point of the season and has split its last 12 games, prompting many observers to ponder what to make of this team two months before Selection Sunday.

If Hubert Davis’ Tar Heels have proven anything during his tenure, it’s that they are loud, bold and dramatic in whatever they do. Blowout losses bookended by blowout victories? Check. Becoming the third No. 8 seed to reach the national championship game? Check. Becoming the sixth preseason No. 1 to fall out of the rankings in 60 years? Check. And if you ever need advice on crashing a nationally televised retirement party, just call the basketball office.

The good news is that this is not your father’s ACC. The once mighty basketball conference has struggled once again this season, ranking seventh overall in the NET rankings, which is a sorting tool utilized by the NCAA Tournament selection committee, and lacking Top-15 representation in those rankings. Virginia is ranked No. 17 in the NET, followed by Duke at No. 23. UNC has plenty of work to do, but undoubtedly has the firepower to course-correct and challenge for the regular season title.

The Tar Heels are once again in familiar territory in the NET. They currently rank No. 32 with a 1-6 record against Q1 opponents. In 2021, UNC ranked No. 32 in the NET on Selection Sunday with a 3-9 record against Q1 opponents and earned the South Region’s No. 8 seeds. This week a year ago Carolina ranked No. 33 in the NET with an 0-4 record against Q1 opponents and ended up as the East Region’s No. 8 seeds.
