Matt Holliday, a seven-time All-Star and a member of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series team, has resigned from his role as bench coach, the team announced Thursday. The Cardinals hired Joe McEwing, who most recently served as the Chicago White Sox’s third base coach, to take over Holliday’s role. Here’s what you need to know:

“Matt stepped down for family reasons, which we understand,” Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said. “Joe is excited to join us, and his resume speaks for himself. Matt is a loss but we are thrilled to be able to hire Joe especially given the time of year.”

Holliday, 42, was set to replace his former teammate and good friend Skip Schumaker, who left the Cardinals to become the Miami Marlins’ manager earlier this offseason. Before taking the major-league role, Holliday most recently volunteered as a coach with Oklahoma State’s baseball team and was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame last summer.

McEwing, 50, comes to St. Louis after spending 15 years in the White Sox organization. He also served as a bench coach under manager Rick Renteria from 2017-20.

Selected by the Cardinals in the 1992 draft, McEwing made his major-league debut in 1998 and played two seasons with the franchise. st. Louis sent him to the Mets via trade during spring training in 2000 in exchange for pitcher Jesse Orosco. McEwing played five seasons with the Mets before going on to play for the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros. During his nine-year career, he compiled a .251 career batting average and played every position on the field except pitcher and catcher.

Holliday’s resignation comes as a surprise to the organization, especially given the timing. Just one month ago, the former Cardinal was lauded by Marmol and Schumaker as the ideal man for the job.

Holliday’s sons certainly factored into the decision. Jackson Holliday was selected by the Orioles as the No. 1 pick in the 2022 draft. His younger son, Ethan, will turn 16 this year and is already projected to be a top amateur draft pick in 2025. — woo

McEwing will immediately join a coaching staff that’s already seen its fair share of turnover this offseason. Both former hitting coach Jeff Albert and former pitching coach Mike Maddux elected not to return to the organization after the 2022 season. Albert eventually joined the Mets as their director of hitting, while Maddux is the pitching coach for the Rangers.

McEwing joins Turner Ward (hitting coach) and Dusty Blake (pitching coach) as the three main coaches most instrumental to Marmol’s day-to-day duties. With exactly one month until Cardinals pitchers and catchers report, the group clearly has their work cut out for them. — woo

(Photo of Joe McEwing: David Richard / USA Today)

Cardinals coaching staff turnover
