LSU true freshman quarterback Walker Howard officially entered the transfer portal Friday, and his second recruitment is starting to take shape.

The former top 40 prospect is set to visit Ole Miss starting Friday, per David Johnson of Inside the Rebels.

Ole Miss is attempting to rebuild its quarterback room after backup Luke Altmyer entered the transfer portal in December. The Rebels have also been in contact with other transfer quarterbacks this offseason, including Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders, per sources. Ole Miss is looking to build quality depth and hopes to add someone who can push starter Jackson Darts.

Another team to watch for Howard is TCU, per multiple sources. The Horned Frogs expect to host Howard at some point over the weekend.

TCU’s quarterback room is also in need of a boost after the departure of Max Duggan to the NFL and Sam Jackson to the transfer portal – he ultimately committed to California. Chandler Morris, the team’s Week 1 starter, does return. Aiding TCU in its pursuit of Howard is former LSU tight end Jack Beckwho transferred to Fort Worth earlier this offseason.

Howard ranked as the No. 40 overall prospects and No. 9 quarterback in the 2022 class, per the 247Sports Composite. He initially picked LSU over Notre Dame.

Here’s 247Sports’ high school evaluation of Howard, per 247Sports national analyst Gabe Brooks:

“Adequate frame with lean build that should add some mass in college. Established a following as an elite camp performer early in high school career before taking over varsity starting duties. Has posted encouraging testing numbers early in career (4.76 40, 4.40 shuttle). Consistent, accurate passer to all levels. He steps into throws and gets great zip on balls to the short-to-intermediate range. Posted stellar production in breakout junior campaign. He threw a lot of reps while also valuing the ball, as evidenced by only one INT per 63 pass attempts (five in 316 throws). Not a true dual-threat but functionally mobile with ability to extend plays outside the pocket. He remains accurate on the move. He squares shoulders and fires even when on the run. Plenty of arm strength but still probably some juice to squeeze out at the top end, which should come with add physical mass/strength. He typically stays on top of the ball but will have one sail a bit every once in a while. He possesses a good QB pedigree. He seems quite polished relative to age and could be a particularly high-floor QB at the next level. Projects to high-major competition with long-term NFL Draft potential.”

The NCAA introduced the transfer portal Oct. 15, 2018, providing athletes a path to explore their options. Players do not need to ask permission from their coaching staff in order to transfer. They merely need to request that compliance enter their name. Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for a player to appear following their request.

Schools are free to contact a player without restriction once their name appears in the portal. While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.

There were 3,083 FBS players to enter the transfer portal during the 2021-22 transfer cycle, sources said. That is up from 2,646 in 2022, 1,692 in 2019-20 and 1,717 in 2018-19.

That whopping increase can be credited to the NCAA’s new policy that student-athletes are allowed to transfer once in their careers without having to sit out a year-in-residence. That means all players who enter the transfer portal for the first time will be immediately eligible at their new school as long as they meet a NCAA-mandated entry deadline.
