The update, which Xbox Insiders can download now, aims to reduce the environmental impact while gaming and introduces several new features to help Microsoft achieve its goal of being a carbon-negative company by 2030. The update introduces several changes, including new carbon-aware downloads and switching your Xbox Series X|S console to the Shutdown (energy saving) power option.

Microsoft says that when your Xbox console is plugged in and connected to the internet, it will use regional carbon intensity data (where available) to schedule game, app, and OS updates at specific times where a higher proportion of electricity is coming from lower- carbon energy sources on the gird. Basically, this means your console will no longer randomly wake up in the night to perform an update and will instead wake at a time when it can use the most renewable energy from your local energy grid. According to Microsoft, this will decrease fossil fuel dependency and CO2 emissions and could save you money. As it stands, this is currently only available to Xbox Insiders that use the Shutdown power mode, but all Xbox users will get this feature in the future.

With this update, Microsoft will also switch your Xbox Series X|S console to the Shutdown (energy saving) power option, as Microsoft says it cuts power use up to 20 times when it’s off compared to the Sleep option. This is a one-time update that will reduce your console’s power consumption while it’s turned off. This will not affect performance, gameplay, or the ability to receive console updates overnight. The only thing it will affect is remote wake, though Microsoft says you can switch back at any time. Xbox One console will also see new power mode options with the update, including shutdown (energy saving).

Another new setting Insiders will receive with the new update is the new ‘Active hours’ setting. For those that use the Sleep power option, you can now adjust your Xbox console’s active hours, allowing it to boot quickly and be available for remote wake during the times you have selected. When your Xbox’s active hours are over for the day, the console will fully shut down. For Xbox Series X|S users, active hours will be automatically enabled and scheduled based on times when the console was previously used, while Xbox One users are given the option to configure their active hours, which will default to ‘always active’ unless changed .

What do you make of these new energy-saving features? Will you be using them with your Xbox console? Let us know down in the comments!
