His longtime fans all have a different favorite movie and performance from the actor, showing the true breadth of his career.  Wayne himself openly discussed <em>The Searchers<\/em> and where it ranked for him alongside the other classics in his filmography.  It turned out that he actually thought two of his Westerns were much better.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-searchers-actor-john-wayne-played-ethan-edwards\">&#8216;The Searchers&#8217; actor John Wayne played Ethan Edwards<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-custom-image-1200\"><figcaption>John Wayne as Ethan Edwards |  Warner Bros.  Pictures\/Sunset Boulevard\/Corbis via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wayne starred as the lead character, Ethan Edwards, in <em>The Searchers<\/em>.  After the end of the Civil War, he returns back to Texas to see his family.  However, he&#8217;s thrown into another kind of war when Comanches attack his brother&#8217;s family.  Some end up dead, while some were abducted.  Therefore, Ethan sets out along with Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter) to rescue his niece, Debbie (Natalie Wood).  The deeper they tread into Comanche territory, the more dangerous their mission becomes.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-holder has-ad spt-initial\"\/>\n<p><em>The Searchers<\/em> is currently sitting at a 94% \u201cFresh\u201d rating on Rotten Tomatoes, remaining one of Wayne&#8217;s greatest films of his career.  However, the film touched more lives than audiences.  Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese credited <em>The Searchers<\/em> with high remarks, pointing to it as a source of inspiration for his own career.  It&#8217;s frequently tagged as one of the greatest movies ever made.  However, Wayne had a bit of a different opinion.<\/p>\n<h2>John Wayne thought &#8216;Red River&#8217; and &#8216;Stagecoach&#8217; were both better Westerns<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stagecoach (1939) Official Trailer - John Wayne, John Ford Western Movie HD\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OE-VWDsdkwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Marc Eliot&#8217;s book <em>American Titan: Searching for John Wayne<\/em>wrote about his legacy from <em>The Searchers<\/em> and beyond.  The Western movie star asked if the John Ford movie was the best he had ever made, but the actor quickly retorted that it wasn&#8217;t.  However, Wayne still loved the movie and thought that it deserved more praise than it got at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I don&#8217;t,\u201d Wayne responded.  \u201cTwo classic Westerns were better\u2013<em>Stagecoach<\/em> and <em>Red River<\/em>\u2013[although I thought] <em>The Searchers<\/em> \u2026 deserved more praise than it got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wayne&#8217;s response here makes sense. <em>Stagecoach<\/em> and <em>Red River<\/em> will always hold a special place in the Western movie star&#8217;s career.  Ford&#8217;s <em>Stagecoach<\/em> marked the beginning of the success in the actor&#8217;s career.  It was an ensemble film that allowed him to stand out, cementing him as a movie star for the ages.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Howard Hawks&#8217; <em>Red River<\/em> allowed Wayne to give a different kind of performance than he had before.  In addition, he once said that it was the first time that he truly considered himself a \u201creal\u201d actor.  Therefore, it&#8217;s reasonable that he ranked both of these films above <em>The Searchers<\/em>which came about later in his career.<\/p>\n<h2>He won his only Oscar for &#8216;True Grit&#8217;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Wayne Wins Best Actor: 1970 Oscars\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7qQhODwivLU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>The Searchers<\/em> Didn&#8217;t earn Wayne the Oscar attention that he was hoping for.  Rather, he earned his first nomination for a non-Western movie performance in the war film <em>Sands of Iwo Jima<\/em>.  Wayne&#8217;s second Oscar nomination was outside of the acting categories, and in the Best Picture category for a passion project called <em>The Alamo<\/em>.  He finally secured the Academy Award win for his performance in <em>True Grit<\/em>which remains one of the most popular Western films of his career.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne always thought his greatest works didn&#8217;t receive the attention that they deserved.  He placed <em>She Wore a Yellow Ribbon<\/em> and <em>Red River<\/em> as some of his very best work, yet he didn&#8217;t receive awards season attention.
