{"id":187662,"date":"2023-01-16T00:28:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-16T00:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/university-of-alabama-basketball-player-darius-miles-among-2-charged-with-capital-murder-in-shooting-death-on-the-strip\/"},"modified":"2023-01-16T00:28:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T00:28:00","slug":"university-of-alabama-basketball-player-darius-miles-among-2-charged-with-capital-murder-in-shooting-death-on-the-strip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/university-of-alabama-basketball-player-darius-miles-among-2-charged-with-capital-murder-in-shooting-death-on-the-strip\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles among 2 charged with capital murder in shooting death on the Strip"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7LHYF4F3BBE33FKJ2HJ6VBCLWM\">University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles is one of two suspects charged with capital murder in a predawn deadly shooting on the Strip in Tuscaloosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EYQ7FKHVNRD2RAQLHXZ2U3EVFU\">It was announced Saturday the junior forward was ruled out for the season due to an ankle injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WIMF54ICMVCODGGZ7WVOWGHVYQ\">A little more than 24 hours later, Miles was being led in handcuffs into the Tuscaloosa County Jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U4TU3RMG2BBU7HSZ6PJBNBNVDE\">Miles, 21, appeared to be crying during a perp walk and said, \u201cI love you,&#8221; and \u201cI love you more than you can imagine,&#8221; several times to someone standing outside the Tuscaloosa County Jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LSD7HCH2IFHUVA6RRA6BC3WY7Q\">Both Miles, of Washington DC, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Maryland, are charged in the killing of as Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, of Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DSMWW7XMEJAMFGYNO7H2JBCZDU\">The shooting happened on the Strip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V5C4GN7QXFD33LUIYMMIYN5APQ\">Neither Davis nor Harris were affiliated with the University.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"University of Alabama basketball player charged with capital murder.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KhiOym3qj8c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JPVBXTCRMNAY3JPVKHH2VJGNNM\">About 1:45 am Sunday, Tuscaloosa police and University of Alabama police were dispatched to the Walk of Champions at Bryant Denny Stadium on a shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QSYIPRI4INHGHIXH653F7Q4IPU\">A vehicle had stopped there upon sighting a University of Alabama Police vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MCO5GTU5OBCV5KWMVTGX5RQDNU\">Harris was dead inside the vehicle, said Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Capt.  Jack Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QP4GBQGO7VAELNGVMAV7CJBZSM\">The driver, who has not been identified, told police their vehicle had been struck by gunfire.  The driver said he had returned fire in self-defense and may have struck a suspect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2HV5ZR5AD5CHVCQWBNDQGXZ47A\">Investigators determined that the shooting happened in the 400 Block of Grace Street off of University Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LPVMMQB3NVEOHBVCY4YJQQVZ6A\">Kennedy said after speaking with multiple witnesses and viewing video surveillance, they identified two suspects.  Both were located and interviewed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IKDPKAAVN5ELXK2IOYO2VRTH54\">One suspect was found to have indeed been struck by gunfire, Kennedy said, and had a non-life-threatening wound.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image\">\n<div class=\"article__image-wrapper\"><figcaption class=\"article__image-caption\">\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">Darius Miles and Michael Davis are charged with capital murder in a deadly shooting on the Strip in Tuscaloosa on Jan.  15, 2023. He appeared in six games this season before being sidelined to focus on rehabbing the injured ankle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AW63HPDMHJD5ZM2DHPJD3NUXZE\">Miles&#8217; profile on the official Alabama athletics website was no longer active with the web address returning a 404 error.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YL4PF4JLOBFPVGDVVGZVDYUA3A\">He was one of the few players from last year&#8217;s team that returned as he started two of the 30 games played as a sophomore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NOEJZSWZAFEDJJWKH4LYLCOAQI\">On Dec.  28, Alabama coach Nate Oats said Miles was away from the team \u201cwith a personal matter.\u201d  \u201cWe&#8217;re not sure how long he&#8217;ll be out,\u201d Oats said after Alabama beat Mississippi State in Starkville.  \u201cWe&#8217;re supporting him through it and trying to help him through it.  That&#8217;s why he wasn&#8217;t on the bench tonight.  It&#8217;s a personal matter, it&#8217;s not an injury and we&#8217;re not quite sure how long he&#8217;ll be out.\u201d  Miles was back on the bench Saturday and <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WayneBama4Life\/status\/1614472464414740482?s=20&amp;t=lFhEPtdJBGI9HGZOzAv7xA\">celebrated with teammates after the 40-point win over LSU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HG7VS2D3FBHG5BYAE2CSHFGQUE\">UA Athletics released this statement following the announcement of Miles&#8217;s arrest:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SB5VPIMSTZFOBOVJDH3AQJMG3U\">\u201cFirst and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim from last night&#8217;s incident.  We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men&#8217;s basketball team.  Athletics, in conjunction with the University, is fully cooperating with this investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EYWITMX5N5GQNK3EVDGNYHLKHU\">The University of Alabama released this statement Sunday evening:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QZMBGWVOYNCQ5O7NS3QM5ORD3E\">\u201cThe University of Alabama&#8217;s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community.  We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim&#8217;s family and friends.  We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency response teams, and we will continue to fully support the ongoing investigation.
