Wednesday&#8217;s show also saw another revolution in the band&#8217;s ongoing drumming saga, as <strong>Jay Lane <\/strong>provided percussion for the majority of the show, with original Dead drummer <strong>Bill Kreutzmann <\/strong>jumping in during \u201cDrums\u201d and finishing out the show.<\/p>\n<p>The last time Dead &#038; Company visited 33 Bob Seger Dr in Clarkston, MI, the shed was known as the <strong>DTE Energy Music Pavilion<\/strong>as it was since 2001. Prior to that, it was Pine Knob since the venue first opened in 1972, and during that time, the amphitheater hosted four Grateful Dead concerts in 1980, 1984, and a two-night run in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Moving from past to present, Weir, Lane, <strong>Mickey Hart<\/strong>, <strong>John Mayer<\/strong>, <strong>Jeff Chimenti<\/strong>and <strong>Hotel Burbridge <\/strong>stepped onstage and dropped straight into the descending opening lick of \u201cMississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo\u201d.  From across that lazy river, Dead &#038; Co journeyed into Disco Dead with \u201cFeel Like a Stranger\u201d, the new curly-haired companion on the kit making himself right at home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Dead &#038; Company \u2013 \u201cMississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo\u201d \u2013 6\/29\/22<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dead &amp; Company LIVE First Song Preview from Clarkston, MI 6\/29\/22\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g1Q5N_un_uw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The historical whiplash of the first set continued with a throwback to the Grateful Dead&#8217;s very first concert on May 5th, 1965 when <strong>The Warlocks<\/strong> played <strong>Magoo&#8217;s Pizza Parlor<\/strong> in Menlo Park, CA and opened up with \u201cCold Rain and Snow\u201d.  The band caught a serious bounce in its step during this traditional tune, as Mayer&#8217;s youthful vocals, Chimenti&#8217;s driving organ, and Lane and Hart&#8217;s synchronicity all connected to give set one some tangible momentum.<\/p>\n<p>That inertia carried the band through a saucy trip down to Minglewood with \u201cNew Minglewood Blues\u201d, before Hotel melted every heart at Pine Knob with his tender reading of \u201cChina Doll\u201d.  The kinetic Yo-yo of the Dead &#038; Company set continued as the self-starter \u201cJack Straw\u201d witnessed the band go from starting position to an all-out sprint, taking that energy through <strong>Johnny Cash<\/strong>&#8216;s \u201cBig River\u201d and finally a set-closing \u201cBird Song\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With the sun dipping down over Clarkston, Dead &#038; Company kicked off set two with \u201cHere Comes Sunshine\u201d, before the improvisational opus \u201cPlaying In The Band\u201d.  The band lingered in the jazz-infused ambiance that came out of \u201cPlaying\u201d before switching gears into the <em>Workingman&#8217;s Dead <\/em>singalong \u201cUncle John&#8217;s Band\u201d, which consistently offers balance in the depths of set two explorations.  Before closing the tune, however, Dead &#038; Company made the move into its first-ever \u201cSupplication\u201d, which first appeared on Weir&#8217;s 1976 album with <strong>kingfish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Dead &#038; Company \u2013 \u201cHere Comes Sunshine\u201d \u2013 6\/29\/22<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dead &amp; Company LIVE Set II Preview from Clarkston, MI 6\/29\/22\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pnu1pSptJiM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>What made the debut of \u201cSupplication\u201d all the more surprising was that it wasn&#8217;t preceded by its typical running partner \u201cLazy Lightning\u201d.  Instead, Lane and Hart led the group into the unconventional 7\/8 timing before Weir delivered his rap over the eerie instrumentation that lay behind him.  Subtly, Mayer began to lay down the descending breakdown from UJB, with Chimenti eventually picking up the hint before the entire band stopped for the A Cappella outro, concluding the \u201cUncle John&#8217;s Band\u201d > \u201cSupplication\u201d > \u201cUncle John&#8217;s Band\u201d sequence.<\/p>\n<p>A late-evening pairing of \u201cChina Cat Sunflower\u201d and \u201cI Know You Rider\u201d came next, leading into \u201cDrums\u201d which summoned Kreutzmann from the wings.  Bill The Drummer took over his seat beside Hart for the percussive breakdown, and would remain for the rest of the show.  Emerging out of \u201cSpace\u201d, Dead &#038; Company offered its fourth-ever \u201cA Love Supreme Jam\u201d, based on the main theme of <strong>John Coltraine<\/strong>&#8216;s 1964 album, <em>A Love Supreme<\/em>.  Though the Grateful Dead never jammed on <em>A Love Supreme<\/em>, <strong>the Dead <\/strong>did at a pair of shows on the Dead &#038; Company predecessor&#8217;s 2004 summer tour.<\/p>\n<p>The cautionary tale of August West then followed with \u201cWharf Rat\u201d before Independence Day weekend started a little early with a set-closing star-spangled run through \u201cUS Blues\u201d.  Returning to the Pine Knob stage one more time, Dead &#038; Company finished out the show with \u201cRipple\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dead &#038; Company&#8217;s tour continues on Friday at <strong>Bethel Woods Center of the Performing Arts <\/strong>in Bethel, NY.
