{"id":19727,"date":"2022-07-20T02:19:39","date_gmt":"2022-07-20T02:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/quidditch-announces-name-change-amid-furor-over-harry-potter-author-jk-rowling-2\/"},"modified":"2022-07-20T02:19:39","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T02:19:39","slug":"quidditch-announces-name-change-amid-furor-over-harry-potter-author-jk-rowling-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/quidditch-announces-name-change-amid-furor-over-harry-potter-author-jk-rowling-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Quidditch announces name change amid furor over &#8216;Harry Potter&#8217; author JK Rowling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Three major organizations that promote and manage the sport of quidditch announced on Tuesday they are changing the name of the game to quadball, partly to distance themselves from \u201cHarry Potter\u201d author and quidditch creator JK Rowling.<\/p>\n<p>The International Quidditch Association (IQA) and US Quidditch (USQ), which are governing bodies for the sport, joined Major League Quidditch (MLQ), a semi-professional league with 16 teams in the US and Canada, in announcing the official name change . <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Quadball, which refers to the number of balls on the field as well as the number of positions, garnered enthusiastic support among the sport&#8217;s community in surveys, according to the groups.<\/p>\n<p>IQA, USQ and MLQ made the decision to rebrand for two reasons.  One was to distance themselves from Rowling, who has made several comments as transphobic.<\/p>\n<p>The second was to trademark a unique name because film and media production company Warner Bros.  owns the trademark for \u201cquidditch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the US, both the USQ and MLQ will own the trademark for \u201cquadball.\u201d  USQ is transitioning immediately to change its organizational name to swap out quidditch for quadball, while MLQ will officially adopt quadball into its name next month.<\/p>\n<p>USQ Executive Director Mary Kimball said quadball has grown significantly and the organizations were \u201ccommitted to continuing to push quadball forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn less than 20 years, our sport has grown from a few dozen college students in rural Vermont to a global phenomenon with thousands of players, semi-pro leagues and international championships,\u201d Kimball said in a statement.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Both USQ and MLQ filed to change the name back in December after polling both players and fans on the idea.<\/p>\n<p>The IQA expects to enter into a license agreement to use \u201cquadball\u201d and will adopt the term into its name in the near future.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"thehill-promo-link\">\n<p>\t\tIvana Trump funeral plans are set Crew member for &#8216;Law &#038; Order&#8217; fatally shot while reserving parking spots near set in NYC<br \/>\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Chris Lau, the chair of the IQA Board of Trustees, said he was \u201cthrilled\u201d to be a part of the movement to change the name.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident in this step and we look forward to all the new opportunities quadball will bring,\u201d Lau said in a statement.  \u201cThis is an important moment in our sport&#8217;s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The game of quidditch was adapted from the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series in 2005 at Middlebury College in Vermont.
