Bryce Young didn’t have to wait for the primetime ESPYs broadcast to claim his award.

The Alabama quarterback’s win in the male college athlete of the year category was announced before the show began 7 pm CT on ABC.

The other three nominees included Georgetown soccer player Dante Polvara, Gonzaga basketball player Chet Holmgren and Maryland lacrosse player Logan Wisnauskas.

Young is the second straight Alabama winner of this award after DeVonta Smith took it in 2021. Before that, Mark Ingram (2010) and Derrick Henry (2016) were nominees as Tim Tebow and Buddy Held respectively won.

The Crimson Tide can still claim another ESPY on Wednesday night as a game of the year nominee for the 4-OT win over Auburn in the 2021 Iron Bowl.

Young joins a short list of Alabama winners at the ESPYs. Tyrone Prothro won the 2006 best play for his legendary catch against Southern Miss the previous fall.
