a tweet from former Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter, only to delete it moments later. The message read, “Loyalty one way is stupidity,” a quote from Jeter in Episode 2 of ESPN’s docuseries “The Captain.”

The aforementioned quote was in reference to a salary arbitration case Jeter held with the Yankees in 1999. Despite propelling the Bronx Bombers to a World Series title the year prior and cementing himself as a leader of the team, general manager Brian Cashman didn’t want to provide Jeter the large sum of money he wanted.

“I never thought ‘they don’t like me as a player.’ They just didn’t like me as much as we asked to get paid,” Jeter said. “[I’m] very loyal, but loyalty one way is stupidity and I expect the same thing in return. And if I feel as though you’re taking advantage or trying to take advantage of me I’m done.”
