Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max concept showing the expected higher $1199 price

Apple’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models have very different designs and specifications. Their production schedules have also taken very different paths, and a new report has only added to the confusion around their release.

Last week, a head-turning report claimed production of iPhone 14 Max displays was “still way behind through August” and 3x behind that of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Doubt surrounding the availability and release of the model grew, especially following earlier reports from Nikkei Asia and Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu that supplies of the iPhone 14 Max will be delayed by almost a month.

Now respected TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shot down these reports in a series of tweets: “I have learned that recently some iPhone 14 panel and memory suppliers have experienced supply issues,” he explains. “But it should have a limited impact on the coming mass production of the iPhone 14 because other suppliers can fill the supply gap.”

Notably, Kuo says that Samsung and new Apple manufacturing partner BOE “can largely fill the gap caused by LG Display’s panel appearance issues”, which predominantly affect the iPhone 14 Max. Kuo also believes LG Display “should not take much time to address the issue.”

Leaked schematics suggest the iPhone 14 will be visually identical to the iPhone 13

It is unusual to see high-profile insiders divided this way, particularly around production, where leaks tend to be pretty consistent as manufacturing volumes crank up and Apple becomes less able to maintain secrecy. Apple has split iPhone releases in the past (iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 8 and iPhone X) due to production issues, which is where the difference in manufacturing volumes could be heading, but it is rare.

More divisive, however, are likely to be Apple’s decisions around the phones themselves. Despite significant design and performance differences between Pro and non-Pro iPhone 14 models, Apple is allegedly increasing prices across the board.

Whether that matters on a long-term carrier contract remains to be seen. With demand looking highly likely to outstrip supply, my guess is any delay to iPhone 14 Max models will ultimately see many Apple fans pay (even) more for a well-stocked Pro model.
