The UCLA Bruins softball team used a late surge to defeat the Florida State Seminoles in a top-10 matchup on Sunday. The Bruins, who are ranked No. 6 in the nation, scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game and eventually won 8-4.

The game was a back-and-forth affair for the first five innings, with the teams trading the lead several times. The Seminoles took the lead in the top of the sixth inning, but the Bruins responded with a four-run outburst in the bottom half of the frame. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double from freshman outfielder Briana Perez and a two-run single from sophomore infielder Aaliyah Jordan.

The late surge gave the Bruins the lead for good, and they were able to hold on for the victory. The win was a big one for the Bruins, as it was their first win over a top-10 opponent this season.

UCLA was led offensively by senior infielder Rachel Garcia, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Garcia has been one of the team’s most consistent hitters this season, and she came through in the clutch on Sunday.

The victory was also a big one for the Bruins’ pitching staff, as freshman pitcher Holly Azevedo earned the win after throwing five innings of shutout ball. Azevedo has been a key part of the Bruins’ success this season, and she was able to shut down a potent Seminoles offense on Sunday.

The Bruins will now turn their attention to their next game, which is a non-conference matchup against the Arizona Wildcats on Tuesday. With the win over Florida State, the Bruins have a chance to move up in the rankings and solidify their spot as one of the top teams in the country.
