During his explosive news conference earlier this month, Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher invited investigation into Nick Saban’s past while making several vague accusations about the Alabama coach.

“Some people think they’re God. Go dig into how God did his deal. You may find out about a guy a lot of things you don’t want to know, ”Fisher said May 19.“ We build him up to be the czar of football. Go dig into his past di lui or anybody that’s ever coached with him. You’ll find out anything you want to find out about what he does and how he does it. “

Besides Fisher, who coached with Saban at LSU, there are three of Saban’s former Alabama assistants currently holding SEC head coaching jobs. Two of them are Florida’s Billy Napier and Georgia’s Kirby Smart, who both held news conferences Tuesday morning at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Florida.

Napier was asked how valid Fisher’s claims were, from his own experience with Saban as an analyst in 2011 and wide receivers coach from 2013-16. He did not directly answer the question.

“Coach Saban was really good to me and my career, and I certainly wouldn’t be standing here without him,” Napier responded. “He hired me two different times. A lot of what we learned, we’ve applied. Certainly going forward we’ll continue to apply what we’ve learned. “

The first-year Gators coach then winked to the room of reporters.

“I’m not foolish enough to get caught commenting about that situation,” he said. “I’ll let those two gentlemen handle that. But both are very accomplished, both are competitors, both have conviction about who they are and what they do. It’s one of the reasons they’ve had success. In this profession, right, there’s a lot of ways to skin a cat, in all the different areas. I think the University of Florida right now, we’re trying to get our organization in order and certainly thankful for Coach and what he did for my career. “

Smart, who joined Saban’s first staff at Alabama in 2007 and served as defensive coordinator from 2008-15, faced a similar question. He also did not directly answer it.

“To be honest with you, my phone started blowing up right when Jimbo hit press conference, and I haven’t thought about it a day since,” Smart said. “Because in the world that we operate, you’re worried about what’s in front of you right now, which is the 15 recruits I’m trying to get on the phone, the conversations I’m trying to have. I’m not really worried about a feud between two guys that used to sit in the same staff meeting and have similar conversations. “

The third former Saban assistant in the SEC, Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin, is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday evening. Fisher is not scheduled to speak publicly Tuesday.
