There are plenty of good storylines for Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader between the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers.

First and foremost, we have the MLB debut of Kody Clemens, the youngest son of former New York Yankees ace Roger Clemens.

ESPN reports the Tigers called up Kody Clemens from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. The 26-year-old is a left-handed hitter who plays infield and outfield. For MLB Trade Rumors:

A third-round pick by the Tigers in the 2018 amateur draft after posting a 1,170 OPS in his junior season, the University of Texas product commanded a $ 600K bonus and a promotion to Double-A Erie by the end of his first full professional season . His career minor league numbers (.252 / .320 / .444) are hardly eye-popping, but he has the positional versatility to contribute around the diamond and is off to a strong start (.283 / .316 / .527 with 8 home runs in 197 plate appearances) at Triple-A Toledo.

ESPN reports Roger Clemens plans to be in Detroit Tuesday to watch Kody’s debut.

“He’s scrambling and trying to figure out when he’s going to fly here,” Kody Clemens said after Detroit’s 7-5 win on Monday. “He loved it. He was like ‘You’re a big leaguer, kid.’ “

Kody Clemens will wear No. 21, the same number Roger Clemens wore with the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner changed to No. 22 with the Yankees and Houston Astros.

“Obviously, I’m trying to create my own career path here, but to wear his number is awesome,” Kody Clemens said. “Luckily, we always say that I’m glad I’m a hitter, not a pitcher, so I don’t have to live up to what he did. Half a career as his of him is unbelievable. “

According to ESPN, Kody Clemens will start the second game of Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader in Detroit. However if things change on the fly for the Tigers, Clemens could make his debut in Game 1 against rising Twins prospect Devin Smeltzer. The left-hander appears to have earned a full-time spot in Minnesota’s starting rotation after going 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA in three starts this year.

Smeltzer made his MLB debut with the Twins in 2019 and had cups of coffee with Minnesota in 2020 and 2021. Overall, he’s 5-2 with a 3.62 ERA in 22 MLB appearances (10 starts).

Smeltzer’s rise to the majors is more than just a local-kid-makes-good story. The 26-year-old Voorhees, NJ native was diagnosed with cancer when he was nine years old. Doctors found a grapefruit-sized cancerous tumor against his bladder di lui. Smeltzer underwent surgery, plus six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The treatment worked, as his cancer of him went into full remission in 2012.

Smeltzer played high school ball at Bishop Eustace Prep in Pennsauken and was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 33rd round of the 2014 MLB Draft coming out of high school. Smeltzer skipped the Padres and went to Florida Gulf Coast University before transferring to San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas.

The Dodgers selected Smeltzer in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. The Twins acquired Smeltzer in the 2018 trade that sent second baseman Brian Dozier to Los Angeles.
