Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy discusses the topic and apparent mystery of Will Byers’ sexuality.

Levy was asked by Entertainment Weekly about the character’s sexuality, which has frequently been the center of fan speculation. “Without getting into where we go later in Season 4 [Volume 2]I guess I’ll just say that there aren’t many accidents on Stranger Things, “he explained.” There is clear intention and strategy and real thought given to each and every character. So, if you came away from Volume 1 feeling those bread crumbs of plot and character, it’s probably no accident. “

Will Byers, portrayed by Noah Schnapp, has been a mainstay of Stranger Things since the series premiered on Netflix in 2016. The first season saw Will at the center of the action both literally and figuratively. His abduction di lui by the monstrous Demogorgon and subsequent disappearance into the Upside Down was the driving force behind the events of Season 1, with the repercussions of his time di lui there continuing to affect the story going forward.

The character’s sexuality has been the focus of speculation for some time now, with many fans honing in on one moment from the Season 3 episode “Chapter Three: The Case of the Missing Lifeguard.” The scene in question saw Finn Wolfhard’s Mike Wheeler lash out at Will during a game of Dungeons & Dragons, proclaiming, “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” Levy commented on the scene, saying, “It’s not specific to sexual orientation or anything.” Instead, Levy regarded the scene as one highlighting the difference in emotional stages between the characters due to Will’s traumatic absence of her.

Schnapp has also commented on Will fan theories himself, saying, “While all the characters were out developing and growing up, Will was in the Upside Down and he was alone there, not interacting with or connected to his friends or the rest of the world . ” Schnapp continued, “And when he got back, he expected everything to just go back to how it was before, how it was when he was normal and when he was a kid and he wanted to go back to the basement and play D&D. “

The significance of Dungeons & Dragons in Stranger Things is one that both fans and crew have embraced, with the cast of the series slated to stream their own D&D campaign in honor of Netflix’s Geeked Week.
