And now as an arm64 platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><\/p>\n<p>                    <img src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/oses&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YueEaOGOXGXRdNzs2gWG9wAAAIw&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Among the headline features of version 5.19 of the kernel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support for Intel&#8217;s Trust Domain Extensions that isolate virtual machines from the virtual-machine manager\/hypervisor and any other software on the platform, to add isolation beyond that achievable with conventional virtualization;<\/li>\n<li>Support for AMD&#8217;s SEV-SNP, which protects VMs against attacks on the hypervisor;<\/li>\n<li>Multiplatform support for Arm is pretty much done;<\/li>\n<li>Improved monitoring of ASUS motherboards;<\/li>\n<li>Removal of support for Renesas&#8217;s H8\/300 CPU architecture, which has the odd distinction of already having been removed from the kernel, then reinstated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The fine folk at <i>Phoronix<\/i> have an extensive list of what&#8217;s new in 5.19.<\/p>\n<p>Torvalds&#8217;s post ends with a footnote in which he states he intends to call the next release of the kernel version 6.0 &#8220;since I&#8217;m starting to worry about getting confused by big numbers again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s slightly inconsistent with the 4.x series, which reached version 4.20, but follows the same scheme used on the 3.x series which stopped at 3.19.<\/p>\n<p>None of which makes a real difference anyway, because there is no indication the next kernel will offer the kind of step-change in functionality that would justify a x.0 release in either open source or commercial software.  \u00ae<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Linus Torvalds has released version 5.19 of the project, and hailed Apple&#8217;s homebrew silicon \u2013 and the Asahi Linux distribution that runs on it \u2013 for making Arm-powered computers useful for developers.
