The Texas Rangers have made a big move to bolster their forward depth, acquiring Tyler Motte from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Julien Gauthier.

Motte, 26, is a veteran of five NHL seasons, having played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, and Senators. He has a career total of 24 goals and 25 assists in 181 games. This season, Motte has four goals and three assists in 20 games for Ottawa.

Motte is a versatile player who can play center or wing, and is known for his speed and two-way play. He has a strong defensive game, and his ability to win puck battles and create turnovers is an asset. He’s also a responsible penalty killer, and can chip in with some offense.

The Rangers are hoping that Motte can provide some depth and stability to their forward group, which has been inconsistent this season. He’ll likely be a bottom-six forward, but his defensive ability and versatility should make him a valuable asset.

In return, the Senators receive Julien Gauthier, a 21-year-old forward who was taken 21st overall by the Rangers in the 2016 NHL Draft. Gauthier has yet to make an impact at the NHL level, as he has only played in three NHL games over the past two seasons.

Gauthier has been playing for the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack this season, and has five goals and two assists in 14 games. He’s a big, physical forward who can score goals and bring some energy to the Senators’ lineup.

This trade should benefit both teams, as the Rangers get a veteran presence to help their forward depth, while the Senators get a young forward with potential.
