Outside of a dominant performance from the bullpen tonight, this was a pretty ugly game for the Chicago Cubs all things considered. But all of the ugliness was QUICKLY erased with the team’s first walk-off win of the season. Even better, the game-winning RBI came off the bat of rookie Christopher Morel… with two strikes against the first place Milwaukee Brewers in extra innings!

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about. He is just so dang special and fun to watch.

Here’s what happened, in case you couldn’t watch: Jason Heyward started the 10th inning as the freebie runner on second base. He was advanced to third on Nick Madrigal’s little dinker to first. Then, the rookie stepped up to the plate, taking his already-familiar deep breaths between pitches, and delivered a game-winning, walk-off sacrifice fly to left field!

His hitting streak may have come to an end tonight, but his on-base streak stayed alive AND he won the Cubs the game. What a moment. I love it.

From the first-at-bat homer to the new Cubs on-base record to begin his career, Christopher Morel has been the spark this team has been seeking all season. He’s just a joy. He’s so young. And so far, he’s been so very good.

Here are some more images from the walkoff, when he was appropriately mobbed by his team.

And here’s a little more on Morel’s start and the Cubs plan for him moving forward.
