Alright, well, here’s the skinny: The Cubs played one UGLY game tonight.

They were thrown out on the bases THREE times (Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, and Nico Hoerner leaning off first base to end the ninth inning). They dropped an infield pop-up between the catcher and the pitcher. They let the go-ahead runner advance to third on a dropped pitch in extra innings. They let Jace Peterson notch THREE extra-base hits. The offense completely shutdown after a nice first inning (rookie Jason Alexander set down 9 Cubs in a row before an Alfonso Rivas bunt single), as they struggled to elevate ANYTHING into the outfield. And they had two calls on the field overturned after review (which isn’t so much ugly, as it was annoying).

BUT NONE OF THAT MATTERS ANYMORE, BECAUSE CHRISTOPHER MOREL SAVED THE DAY!

This kid, man. I love it.

The Cubs were 5-13 in one run games before tonight, but they just closed that gap with one more win over the Brewers. That was beautiful and it helped the Cubs salvage a four-game series split. Whether or not that matters in the grand scheme of the season is irrelevant right now. Sometimes, it’s just nice to enjoy nice things.

Setting aside the extra-inning fun, Kyle Hendricks had a so-so night. He looked pretty good early on, painting both sides of the plate with precision. But eventually, the hard contact came for him, some of which found the gaps. And ultimately, he allowed 3 earned runs over just 5.0 IP with just one strikeout.

But the bullpen absolutely LOCKED things down from there, setting up the walk-off win:

How about that Cubs bullpen tonight ?!

Norris, Rucker, Wick, Robertson, and Leiter Jr. with five scoreless innings with 10Ks, 2 hits, and just one walk!

Beyond that, Christopher Morel extended his on-base streak, Willson Contreras hit ANOTHER ball over 115 MPH (his second in as many days), and the Cubs split the series. That’s a good win. And a good night.
