ON DEBATE BETWEEN ADDING A GAME AND DOING AWAY WITH DIVISIONS AT THE EXPENSE OF A NON-CONFERENCE GAME

“It’s hard because I really want to add the game, but I want to do it more for the fans. I really feel like fans and the consumers that come to our games, they want the best games. They want the intraconference. They want to see SEC play SEC teams. So I want to give them what they want. I also want the best opportunity for our conference to get more teams in the playoff. Well, is the Playoff of the future four? Is the Playoff of the future eight? Is it six, 12? I don’t know that, but you want the most opportunities. As the Playoff number grows, I think there’s more people comfortable with more SEC games, but that’s not the only reason to do it. The reason to do it is, it’s the best teams playing the best teams, and for viewership, I know our fanbase at Georgia, they want to see us play Texas A&M. We haven’t gone to Texas A&M. It’s a 12 year cycle. They’re going to have the ability to tighten the cycle even more if you play more games. “

ON MORE SEC GAMES BEING BRUTAL / LOOKING BACK AT THE COVID YEAR

“It is a brutal stretch. It’s tough on the players, and I think we’ve got to be smart, because all this adding games and adding physicality to games and adding teams, if you add more games you may have to do something with the clock or to manage the game tighter to reduce the number of plays. Just making a subtle change to the clock management could shorten the plays which could shorten the season which could make more games not actually more games. “

ON WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE

“They need to tighten that up. I was actually on a rules committee, and that was a part of the conversation. Our game average length is not that far off of the NFL’s, but our extremes are different. We’d love to tighten that up. Our longest games are long. Our shortest games are short. So that median, somewhere in the middle there is not that far off of the NFL, and we’d love to tighten that up. That would allow us to play more games because the players would have less snaps. You’re trying to not increase snaps. “

ON WHAT HE WOULD CHANGE TO CREATE THAT CHANGE

“It’s been discussed. Running clock after an incompletion. You get an incompletion, you get a running clock up until the last two minutes of a game or last four minutes of the game. It would reduce that time some. It would probably be overall better for the viewership. We’ve got to think about our customers in our fanbase out there. But there’s so many good rivalries in the SEC, I hope we don’t lose those. There’s certainly a new opportunity with new teams coming in to get some games going. “

ON NOT LOSING A RIVALRY IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGE

“We’re in a unique position because we have the continuous states that all touch. It makes it tough. Our fanbase is so passionate, each part of the state likes this rivalry better. How do you keep them all happy? It’s really tough. Where a lot of SEC teams really have one or two rivalries, we really have four or five. “

YEAH, NOT TO DRAW A MAP HERE, BUT YOU GO DOWN TO WEST GEORGIA, AND YOU’RE IN AUBURN COUNTRY, THEORETICALLY

“That’s right. They care more about it [that rivalry]. “
