The latest benchmark in the college basketball offseason has come and passed, and the Michigan men’s basketball team once more has scholarship spots to fill. The NBA Draft withdrawal deadline occurred Wednesday, and both Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate declined to return to college, instead sticking with their NBA pursuits.

That leaves two open scholarships for Michigan, and a roster that could use help in the NCAA Transfer Portal.

In this story, we break down what the Wolverines are likely looking for in the transfer portal, and take a look at eight total players who could fit that bill.

What does Michigan need?

Before we dive into the prospects Michigan may be interested in, it may be worthwhile to break down the traits the Wolverines should be looking for in a transfer portal player:

Shooting – This is a must. Last season, the Wolverines ranked 235th in the country in made 3-pointers (213) and 175th in 3-point percentage (33.9), and Michigan will lose 164 of those 3-pointers (77.0 percent) heading into next season. The Wolverines’ leading returning player in 3-pointers made is Hunter Dickinson (21 3s), and the only other player back who made more than eight 3s is Terrance Williams II, who had 20.

If Michigan wants space by the rim for Dickinson and others, it needs to earn that spacing by making 3-point shots. Jett Howard can shoot, and Kobe Bufkin, Jaelin Llewellyn and Terrance Williams have all shown the propensity to shoot 3s, but another consistent and proven 3-point shooter is imperative.

Positional fits – Michigan has a quality first- and second-string player at center and point guard, but could use all the help it could get elsewhere.

To make it clear, here’s roughly how we see Michigan’s three other positions shaking out:
