Since Netflix’s first-quarter earnings report back in mid-April when it declared it had lost 200,000 subscribers, the company’s stock value has dropped 44%.

Though the company still dominates the streaming space with 221 million subscribers, Disney + and its bundle apps (Hulu and ESPN +) are closing in fast with 205 million combined. In addition, investors are getting nervous about the entire SVOD sector altogether.

So Netflix needs to change and the days of its seemingly endless and directionless wild spending appear to be over. A new THR feature report citing multiple sources indicates a good portion of those changes are going on in Netflix’s feature films division led by Scott Stuber.

Following a significant layoff of 2% of its workforce, the cuts have reportedly wiped out the family live-action film division, while the original independent features division has also been cleared out and they are downsizing their animation projects.

The new mantra at the streamer is to release fewer movies and to make them both ‘bigger’ and ‘better’. In other words quality over quantity. Small movies aren’t necessarily going away and in fact they may get even more niche, whilst the streamer will keep acquiring distribution rights for them such as its recent “Pain Hustlers” deal at Cannes.

Those involved point out this doesn’t mean they’ll all be big-budget films, rather as the trade says instead of making two movies for $ 10 million, the company will make one for $ 20 million – the goal being “to make the best version of something instead of cheapening out for the sake of quantity. “

Many of the sources for the article say the “era of expensive vanity projects” is likely over and the streamer’s “tendency to do anything to attract talent and giving them carte blanche is going away”. However, the company is also going to put more emphasis on its ‘big event films’ as opposed to a few years ago when Netflix had very few of them.
