Some Star Wars fans are seeing parallels between Obi-Wan Kenobi star Moses Ingram’s struggle with online attacks and Gina Carano’s 2021 firing from The Mandalorian.

Ingram, who plays Inquisitor Reva (aka the Third Sister) on Obi-Wan Kenobirecently revealed she’d received overtly racist and hateful messages after her Star Wars debut. Disney was quick to publicly denounce the attacks and express support for Ingram. Carano caught the attention of Star Wars fans in 2020 when she began sharing right-wing conspiracy theories and anti-woke messaging on Twitter, and Disney fired Carano not long after. Carano also received a barrage of hateful messages on social media around that time. Now, supporters of Carano are making their thoughts known, calling Disney out on what they see as a hypocritical handling of Ingram’s situation as opposed to Carano’s di lei.

In response, other fans rejected the notion that Ingram’s situation is at all equivalent to Carano’s. Many pointed out that Disney’s firing of Carano over controversial social media posts is not comparable to the company’s defense of Ingram during an onslaught of racist attacks.

On May 31, Ingram shared some of the vitriolic messages she received, which included death threats. The Obi-Wan Kenobi star stated, “The thing that bothers me is this feeling inside of myself … that I have to shut up and take it, that I have to grin and bear it. And I’m not built like that. So, I wanted to come on and say thank you to the people who show up for me in the comments and the places that I’m not going to put myself. ” Disney made its stance clear when it comes to any hateful criticism towards Ingram. In a post to the official Star Wars Twitter account, the company stated, “We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold. If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist. ”

Carano first appeared in the Star Wars universe as the mercenary Cara Dune in Seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian. On several occasions from late 2020 to early 2021, the hashtag #FireGinaCarano spread across Twitter in response to her controversial posts. In one instance, she changed her Twitter profile to add “beep / bop / boop” next to her name di lei, which some fans saw as a mockery of nonbinary people. In a later tweet, Carano suggested the persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust is comparable to being a Republican in modern America. Carano also regularly posted anti-vax and anti-mask messaging and supported the debunked notion that voter fraud occurred in the 2020 US election. In February 2021, Lucasfilm released an official statement confirming that Carano was no longer employed by the company.

Fellow Obi-Wan Kenobi star and returning Star Wars veteran Ewan McGregor expressed his feelings about Ingram’s situation on the official Star Wars Twitter account. McGregor said, “I just want to say as the leading actor in the series, as the executive producer on the series, that we stand with Moses, we love Moses, and if you’re sending her bullying messages, you’re no Star Wars fan in my mind. “He left off with,” There’s no place for racism in this world. I totally stand with Moses. “
