Proctor will be 19 years old next summer, making him eligible to bypass college basketball completely in favor of the 2023 NBA Draft, something that was under consideration before his decision to move up a year was made.

“I think when the time is there and I feel right, and my family feels right, whenever that may be, yeah one hundred percent,” he said of the possibility of testing the draft process.

“We have had extensive talks with Tyrese and his family over the last few weeks and we are thrilled to be welcoming him on the 2022-23 team, “said Duke head coach Jon Scheyer. “Tyrese has a special feel for the game with great scoring instincts who will add to the versatility, competitiveness, and high character of this team. Proctor becomes the newest member of a Duke freshman class that is already ranked No. 1 nationally by ESPN, Rivals and 247 Sports. Proctor originally committed to Duke on April 7, 2022.

“The moment I stepped foot inside Cameron I knew it was where I belonged,” said Proctor. “I’m ready to step up and face a new challenge where I maximize my development as a player and continue to grow on and off the court. Waiting a year to put on that Duke jersey was too long. After weighing my options with my family and coaches, I’m excited to announce I will be reclassifying up to the class of 2022. It will be an honor to join Coach Scheyer’s first team and represent one of the best universities in the world on the basketball court. I can’t wait to get to work at Duke! “

For now, however, Proctor says the next dream for his basketball career is to play in college.

“My goal is the NBA, and I’ve always watched college basketball justing seeing March Madness and the environment they’ve got there. As I’ve gotten older and more stuff started popping up with visits, that’s when [playing in college] started becoming real. It wasn’t set, but [playing in college] was always there. “
