Former Detroit Tigers outfielder and one-time top Texas Rangers prospect Nomar Mazara is expected to return to the major leagues Thursday.

The San Diego Padres are expected to release Robinson Cano according to The Athleticcreating a position on the roster for Mazara, who struggled in 50 games with the Tigers in 2021.

Mazara, 27, hit .212 for the Tigers with three homers and 19 RBIs in 2021. He also spent time on the disabled list with the Tigers with an abdominal strain.

Mazara signed a minor-league contract with the Padres before the 2022 season and has dominated in Triple A, hitting .367 with a .454 on-base percentage and a .641 slugging percentage. Through 152 plate appearances, Mazara has seven homers and 14 doubles.

In his first four seasons in the majors, all with the Texas Rangers, Mazara hit 20 homers in the first three and 19 in the fourth. Texas traded him to the Chicago White Sox before the 2020 season, but he struggled in Chicago, hitting .228 with one homer.

The Padres are expected to option Cano to Triple A, a move Cano is also expected to refuse. Cano, who was released earlier this season by the New York Mets, would become a free agent for the second time this season. After hitting .195 for the Mets, Cano would finish his San Diego Padres career with an .091 batting average. He managed three singles in 33 at bats, with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Cano, 39, has struggled in his return to baseball. The 17-year veteran was suspended for the 2021 season after a second positive PED test. The Mets still owe Cano approximately $ 45 million as part the 10-year contract he signed with the Seattle Mariners before the 2014 season.

Seattle traded Cano to the Mets, along with reliever Edwin Diaz and $ 20 million before the 2019 season for outfielders Jay Bruce and Jarred Kelenic plus pitchers Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista and Justin Dunn.

The Padres open a four-game series at Milwaukee at 7:40 pm Thursday.
