Another weird situation cropped up in Destiny 2 this week as Bungie put in a hotfix that finally, in the last week of Solstice, granted boosted character progression to alternate characters who are pursuing white glows on their armor through 24 completed challenges.

It was puzzling why Bungie decided to do away with this after it was standard in the last few Solstice events in Destiny 2, and now that it’s finally here, it may be too late for some, who already spent time grinding out their alts the old fashioned way with no boosts. There was also no actual announcement that this change was coming until the hotfix went live, which is somewhat frustrating.

However, even though this is the final week of Solstice, the new boost comes with a bonus in the sense that it is better than past boosts we’ve seen in this event. Previously, you would have to “finish” a character by maxing out challenges before the boost would start to kick on your alts, but that isn’t true this time around.

Rather, this time, the boost is per challenge. So that means when you’ve finished any one of the 24 challenges on one character, it boosts it 2x on your second. Finish that challenge on two characters, and it will boost it 3x on the third. That means for things like the 25 Crucible/Gambit matches, that can get dramatically reduced before doing allll the other challenges along with it.

This is actually based on a request from previous Solstices, as it felt inefficient to even start other characters before you had fully finished one and gotten the boost. Now, you can work on multiple characters at once and feel like you’re not wasting your time.

Again, I have no idea why this boost was not activated in the first place, given that it should have been pretty clear that challenges like 75 total Crucible/Gambit games or 30 Wellspring runs were going to feel too grindy across a full set of characters . I’m not clear on whether the boost was supposed to be active and was just never turned on, or if that was done on purpose and Bungie had to get feedback from players that yes, they still very much wanted the alt boost, in order to re-implement it.

This hotfix also came with fixes for various quest issues with Solstice, so if you were running into problems like your ash conversion not counting or only getting 1 ash per run, those should be fixed now in the final week here. The risks of a live game, given that by the time fixes roll around, you may really be getting down to the wire when events are about to end.

We’ll see what Solstice brings next year. My guess is it will be pretty similar to this year’s, but with boosts activated from the get-go.
