After breaking through with the program’s first national championship since 1980, the Georgia Bulldogs are gearing up to impress as part of their follow-up act. Achieving similar results in 2022 won’t be easy, but the team gets back to work Thursday toward the goal of doing just that.

Georgia opens fall camp on Thursday as the team prepares for the 2022 season, which opens on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a showdown against Oregon in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. As of Wednesday, the Bulldogs stand 31 days away from the season opener with the understanding there’s more to be done before kickoff finally arrives.

If there was any concern about complacency within Georgia’s program after winning it all, head coach Kirby Smart dispelled such thoughts when asked about it at SEC Media Days.

“I’m not wired that way. I’m worried to worry the day after the game to worry about who we were going to sign,” Smart said. “I kind of told our team when we came back, I said, ‘Look, guys, I believe in these mind tricks where when people tell you something, it triggers something. Every time someone tells me congrats on the national championship — and there have been a gazillion of those — I tell myself each week, this week I’m going to call three more recruits. Next week, I’m going to think about what we can do on third down better.’ I tell our players when you hear that comment, you need to think about what have you done today to be better for tomorrow. It just triggers my brain to go somewhere else. My brain has been somewhere else a lot because of that because we’ve gotten a lot of that.”

Below is what I project the defensive depth chart for the Bulldogs will be once fall camp is said and done. These projections are based on what we saw in the spring, what we’ve heard during the summer and what we expect to see over the next month. keep in mind that several positions on both sides of the ball will feature competitions; this depth chart is based on who I think ultimately wins those jobs over the next month.
