ALLEN PARK – D’Andre Swift has been one of the Detroit Lions’ best skill players whenever he’s been on the field. Last season, he was one of the best pass-catching running backs in the whole league whenever he was on the field.

The problem, of course, is he’s not always on the field.

Now the Lions are trying to prepare him to play through pain in 2022.

“Injuries happen, but one of the things Swift – and I had a conversation about – is you’ve got to be able to play through some of these injuries as a running back,” position coach Duce Staley said this week. “We all know there’s a difference between being injured and hurt. As soon as you step in this building as a running back, Day 1 training camp, you’re not going to feel the same. There will be some things you have to fight through. “

Swift has had some things to fight through over the years too, from his groin to his hip, shoulder and even his head. But he hasn’t always been able to, especially in training camp. He missed most of the summer as a rookie while dealing with a hip issue, which forced him to come off the bench behind an aging Adrian Peterson to open that season. He played well when he did hit the field and eventually won the starting job, but also missed three games along the way.

A year later, he missed most of training camp once again, this time with a groin issue. The Lions were forced to open the season by bringing Swift off the bench again. He still managed to lead all NFL running backs in catches heading into Thanksgiving, although he suffered a shoulder injury in that game that cost him four more games.

Injuries happen, especially at that position. Every running back will miss time eventually, and the Lions understand that. But every NFL running back also plays through pain, and the Lions want Swift to better understand where that line is between being able to play and having to shut things down.

“He knows (we need him out there), which is good,” Staley said. “Playing running back, you’re going to take your fair share of hits. You just have to make sure you protect yourself when it’s the time to protect yourself, and then there’s going to be time to put it all out there. “

Swift has put on some weight to help him handle the hits better, and has even rolled up his sleeves at practice to show off the pipes.

“Please, don’t tell him (he looks bigger),” Staley quipped. “That’s only because he did five pushups before practice.”
