EAST LANSING – Tom Izzo is staying in the family and in the state in filling his third and final assistant coaching job.<\/p>\n

Former Michigan State player and staffer Thomas Kelley will return to East Lansing as a Spartans assistant coach, sources told MLive.<\/p>\n

Kelley has spent the last four seasons as an assistant at Western Michigan under Steve Hawkins and Clayton Bates. Prior to that, he was a graduate assistant at Michigan State for two years.<\/p>\n

Kelley takes the place of Dwayne Stephens, who left in April to become the head coach at Western Michigan after 19 seasons on Izzo’s staff.<\/p>\n

Stephens retained Kelley as a WMU assistant immediately after his hiring in Kalamazoo but will now lose him back to Michigan State.<\/p>\n

Kelley played at Michigan State from 1995-99, the first four seasons of Tom Izzo’s tenure. His 115-game career in which he averaged 5.3 points and 2.0 assists per game culminated in a Final Four appearance in 1999.<\/p>\n

From there, Kelley embarked on a 15-season overseas career that included stops in Israel, Turkey, Austria, Hungary and other locations.<\/p>\n

After Stephens, Mike Garland and Dane Fife served as the program’s three assistants for a decade from 2011-21, the Izzo’s entire staff has now turned over in a little over a year. Fife left last year to become an assistant at Indiana (a job from which he has since departed) and Garland transitioned to an off-court role as special assistant to the head coach later in 2021.<\/p>\n

Kelley will join Mark Montgomery and Doug Wojcik to form the Spartans’ three-member assistant coaching staff in 2022-23.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
