The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline reached $ 4.94 on Friday, according to AAA Michigan – a jump of 13 cents from Thursday’s average price of $ 4.80.

According to GasBuddy, which tracks fuel costs, Detroit’s average price for regular unleaded is at $ 5.01.

Rubbing salt into the wound, fuel costs in Michigan are higher than the national average, which has also spiked. Friday’s national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $ 4.76. That compares with $ 4.71 on Thursday. And Thursday’s price was up 9 cents from Monday.

Motorists filling up in Detroit were fed up with the ever-increasing prices.

“Gas prices are really outrageous right now,” said Timberley Williams of Detroit, who was pumping fuel into her Ford Escape Friday afternoon the BP station at 2600 E. Jefferson, which was charging $ 5.29 a gallon for regular unleaded. “I’d rather walk, but since I just had a baby, that’s not an option.”

Williams said she’s rationing her gas purchases now that it costs her about $ 80 for a full tank. “I just put enough in to get where I’m going,” she said. “I’m not going to fill it up.”

Rob Moore of Detroit, who works for the city, was blunt about the $ 85 cost to fill the tank of his Infiniti with premium unleaded at the same station: “It sucks, man. It’s the worst.”

It’s no wonder drivers are experiencing sticker shock at the pump: a year ago, Michigan motorists were paying an average of $ 3.03 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas.

Howard Hughey, a spokesman for AAA Michigan, said motorists are likely to change their driving habits, but how remains to be seen.

“It will impact drivers’ behavior for obvious reasons, but it’s kind of hard to predict such behavior based upon record highs,” he said. “We’ve never been this high before. So we certainly anticipate that commuting will go down. “

The price of diesel fuel in Michigan is also soaring. As of Friday, the average price for diesel was $ 5.45 per gallon. That’s up 9 cents from Thursday and 20 cents from last week Friday. A year ago, an average gallon of diesel was selling for $ 3.21.

Since last Thursday, AAA said these 10 states have seen the largest increases in their averages: Indiana (+33 cents), Ohio (+31 cents), Illinois (+30 cents), Kentucky (+26 cents), Wisconsin (+26 cents), Michigan (+24 cents), Colorado (+21 cents), New Mexico (+19 cents), Nebraska (+18 cents) and Minnesota (+18 cents).

California has the highest average price at $ 6.25 per gallon.

Experts blame the increase in pump prices partially on the growing demand for gasoline. Other factors include fallout from the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the world’s No. 2 crude exporter after Saudi Arabia, and a Saudi-Russian brokered cap on oil production.

“These supply and demand dynamics have contributed to rising pump prices,” AAA said Thursday. “Coupled with volatile crude oil prices, pump prices will likely remain elevated as long as demand grows and supply remains tight.”

The relentless surge in gas prices has become a political problem for President Joe Biden ahead of mid-term congressional elections this fall.

The higher prices are also a threat to the global economy as it emerges from the pandemic, with both companies and families potentially reducing activity to deflect those costs.

It’s unclear what lies ahead for gas prices, AAA Michigan’s Hughey said.

“In terms of record prices, we’re not sure what to predict at this point,” he said. “But we do hope and expect that at some point, it will stabilize. What that final number is in terms of stabilization is yet to be determined. So stay tuned. “

Hughey offered tips to motorists grappling with the high pump prices.

“One of the first things we try to advise people to do is to plan ahead, combine errands to help limit drive time…” he said. “You know, instead of mindlessly going down the street here and then maybe an hour or two later going down the street there. Try to figure out where you need to go and map out a route so as to be more efficient with your commute. “

He also suggested finding nearby gas stations with lower prices, using fuel loyalty programs and using cash instead of debit or credit cards.

“We know that paying in cash will save you a good 10 to 12 cents maybe per gallon as opposed to paying with your card,” he said.

Reducing a vehicle’s load can also save on fuel costs, Hughey said.

“A lot of people may not be aware, but the heavier your vehicle is, typically the higher the drag, which means the more fuel your engine is burning,” he said.

“So if you have any necessary or excess weight in your vehicle, take it out. Drive lighter if you can. That will help some with your fuel efficiency, especially if you’re filling your tanks during these high gas price times. “
