Depp win could “embolden” those accused of abuse<\/p>\n

The New York Times’ Julia Jacobs has talked to legal experts who believe Depp’s courtroom win may encourage more people accused of abuse or misconduct to take defamation cases to trial.<\/p>\n

I do think that well-resourced individuals who feel slighted by speech that embarrassed or criticized them in some way may feel emboldened by this verdict<\/strong>\u201dJacobs was told by First Amendment law professor Nicole Ligon.<\/p>\n

Experts also feel the Depp v Heard outcome could \u201chave a chilling effect on the victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse\u201d, Jacobs said.<\/p>\n
