BALTIMORE – Shane Beiber likes the Orioles. It’s understandable if they don’t feel the same about him.

Bieber, backed by early offense, didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning Friday night as the Guardians beat Baltimore, 6-3, at Camden Yards. The Guards have won four straight, matching their longest winning streak of the season, and five of their last six games.

In three career starts against Baltimore, Bieber is 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA over 24 innings. Bieber has recorded 37 strikeouts, including a season-high 11 Friday, in those 24 innings.

Bieber retired 17 of the first 19 Orioles he faced. Anthony Santander and Ryan Mountcastle were the only baserunners as they drew walks in a three-batter span in the first and second inning.

Trey Mancini ended Bieber’s no-hit bid with a clean single to left field with one out in the sixth. It came on Bieber’s 79th pitch of the game.

“I’m thinking no-hitter from pitch one until I give one up,” said Bieber. “Anybody who tells you otherwise is lying.”

Two plays in the outfield helped create the no-hit vibe. Oscar Mercado robbed Ryan Montcastle with a diving catch to end fourth in right center field. Left fielder Ernie Clement started the fifth with a nice catch of Adley Rutschman’s drive toward the line after long run.

But Mancini ended it.

“Trey earned it,” said Bieber. “It was 107 mph coming off the bat, but it looked like 120.”

Bieber (3-3, 3.12) retired four straight after Mancini’s hit to take him through the seventh with 93 pitches. He came out for the eighth, but allowed singles to the first two batters he faced – Rougned Odor and Tyler Nevin. Enyel De Los Santos relieved and things got tense.

De Los Santos retired the first two batters he faced, but after advancing Odor and Nevin on a wild pitch, he allowed a two-run double to Mancini. Santander followed with a single to cut Cleveland’s lead in half at 6-3. Eli Morgan, called a weapon by manager Terry Francona before the game, relieved and struck out Austin Hays to end the rally.

“It was a quick up and in for Eli,” said Francona. “That’s not the easiest thing to do, but he’s done a real good job. We’re trying to figure out where guys fit. Sometimes it’s a little challenging. “

Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth for his eighth save in 10 chances. It was Clase’s first save since May 14 as he retired the side in order while striking out two.

“He looks fine,” said Francona, when asked about Clase. “He’s pitched in a couple of games where he’s come in with a four-run lead. But he looks good. “

Bieber allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings. In his last two starts, he’s struck out 16 and allowed three earned runs in 15 innings. He threw more sliders (39) than fastballs (35) Friday, and they both showed an increase in velocity, according to Baseball Savant data.

“I feel like each start we’re getting closer and closer to where we need to be,” said Bieber. “It feels good to feel for some things in the first two innings and then step on the gas a little bit. That’s what we were able to do tonight. “

The Guardians, 19-6 when they score first, gave Bieber a 5-0 lead after three innings. The top five hitters in the order did the damage with Owen Miller driving in four runs from the cleanup spot.

Amed Rosario singled with one out in the first to start the festivities. Jose Ramirez doubled him to third. Miller made it 2-0 with a double off Nevin’s glove at third.

Myles Straw opened the third against lefty Bruce Zimmerman with a single. Ramirez singled him to third. Miller followed with a line drive single to center. Cedric Mullins dove for the ball, but short hopped it. When the ball rolled out of his glove, Straw raced for home with Ramirez in close pursuit.

Mullins made a strong throw home to Rutschman, but Ramirez beat it with a headfirst slide to the back of the plate. Ramirez may not be the fastest player on the Guardians, but it’s hard to imagine any of his teammates beating him when there’s a run to be scored.

Miller, who took second on the throw home, scored on Josh Naylor’s single for a 5-0 lead.

When asked about Ramirez’s baserunning, Francona said, “I told Sarbie (third base coach Mike Sarbaugh), ‘Good luck stopping him there.’ His clock of him and his vision of him, we get to see it every day. Most guys that are that good, you don’t see them go on contact much or slide into home. Josie craves that. “

The top five hitters in the lineup went 7-for-10 with five runs against Zimmerman (2-4, 4.87) in the first three innings. Zimmerman, in his first start against the Guards, allowed five runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. In his previous start, he gave up six runs on eight hits, including five home runs, in four innings against Boston.

The Guardians made it 6-0 on Naylor’s double off the right field scoreboard in the seventh to score Miller. The Guardians finished with 14 hits, including three by Miller.

Catcher Austin Hedges left the game with a tight quadriceps muscle after an infield single in the eighth. Luke Maile finished the game, but Francona said Hedges should be back in the lineup on Sunday.

Next: RHP Triston McKenzie (3-4, 2.65) will face the Orioles and RHP Tyler Wells (2-4, 3.71) Saturday at 4:05 pm Bally Sports Great Lakes, WTAM and WMMS will carry the game.
