SATURDAY UPDATE: Paramount / Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick is quite simply on a hypersonic tear. Tom Cruise is not only outdoing himself at domestic turnstiles, but he continues to fly higher at the international box office. Friday’s number in 64 overseas markets was $ 19.6M, a drop of just 21% versus last Friday in the holdovers. The running offshore cume through Friday is $ 204.3M – this means that $ 500M global is clearly within sights through Sunday.

Let’s first recall that TG: M is not yet out in Korea which is a huge Cruise market; it goes there June 23 after a visit from the team.

In currently released hubs, the UK has really lit the fires with a $ 4.3M Friday, which is up 4% from opening day last week. The cume there is $ 39.7M. This is a big holiday weekend for Britons amid the Platinum Jubilee, but folks are clearly looking for other celebratory experiences.

In the Commonwealth, Australia‘s Friday was just 6% off the comparable day last session. The cume there is $ 17.1M. New Zealandconversely, was up 6% and through Friday grossed $ 2.4M.

Here in France, Friday this week was down 52% after last week’s Ascension Day holiday record. The local cume is $ 16.7M – and everyone I run into is asking me about the movie and planning multiple viewings.

Japan is the next best grosser at $ 16.6M through yesterday.

Notable jumps include Taiwan where a second Friday at $ 915K was double the opening. There’s likely a sense of pride adding to the momentum since the original Taiwanese flag on Maverick’s jacket appears, despite having been swapped out in early promotions. We’ve heard of cheers inside cinemas at the sight of the patches.

Hong Kong ($ 4.6M running cume) was also up 6% from last Friday while Thailand jumped 55% for a $ 2M running total.

In strong holds, the UAE has now grossed $ 3.7M while the total Middle East region is at $ 12.8M. Brazilwhere Jurassic World Dominion has released early, saw a 25% decline for a $ 7.4M cume. In Italywhere the dinosaurs have also gone early, the TG: M drop was 19% for $ 6.5M through Friday. Mexico took a bigger hit owing to JWDdropping 47%, and cuming $ 6.4M through yesterday.

Other notable markets and cumes include Netherlands ($ 3.4M), Spain ($ 3.2M), Switzerland ($ 2.6M), Malaysia ($ 2.6M) and Singapore ($ 2M).

We’ll have a full update on Sunday.

PREVIOUS, FRIDAY UPDATE: Paramount / Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick has grossed $ 185M at the international box office through Thursday. This puts it on course to cross $ 200M today in offshore play. Couple that with domestic’s equally supersonic performance, and Maverick will reach $ 400M + global in less than two full frames of play.

On Thursday, Tom Cruise’s return to the cockpit surpassed the overseas lifetime of the original 1986 Top Gun which has been clocked at $ 176M. We understand that the gross on that Tony Scott-directed movie is difficult to translate to today’s dollars, given in part that the Euro didn’t even exist pre-2002 and that box office reporting was vastly different back then. Regardless, this is a milestone.

Despite what might be perceived as distractions from the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in the UKthat market has lit the fires for Maverick. The TG: M cume there is $ 35.4M through Thursday. Coincidentally, the spectacle of Thursday “s flypast of Buckingham Palace by aircraft from the Royal Navy and the RAF could essentially equate to free advertising for Maverick while the market has a four-day holiday.

The second best market on TG: M I know far is France at $ 15.7M through Thursday. The movie is benefiting from coverage of the Cannes Film Festival premiere and the love-in there for Cruise. I personally know people who have seen it multiple times here. And, we’re hearing anecdotal evidence of revisits elsewhere.

Just behind France, Australia and Japan are tied at $ 15.2M through Thursday. The Middle East is at $ 9.7M, Germany at $ 9M, Brazil at $ 7M, and Mexico and Italy at 6.1M.

The revisit with Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s ace fighter pilot 36 years after the original summer blockbuster is undeniably a salve for audiences. The Joseph Kosinski-directed film is appealing to all demos, even moviegoers who weren’t around for the original need for speed, and legs are showing up as older demos come out for a movie with mega word of mouth.
