Brittney Griner has officially signed a one-year deal to return to the Phoenix Mercury for the 2021 WNBA season. After a tumultuous 2020 season, the 6-foot-8 center is back with the team that drafted her number one overall in 2013.

Griner, who is a six-time WNBA All-Star, was traded to the Dallas Wings in 2019 after spending her first six seasons with the Mercury. She averaged 14.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in the 2020 season with the Wings.

Griner’s return to the Mercury is a welcome sight for the team, which is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 season. Griner is a dominant force in the paint and will be the anchor of the team’s defense. She is also a capable scorer, averaging 15.5 points per game over her career.

The Mercury have added a number of new pieces this offseason, including point guard Skylar Diggins-Smith and forward Brianna Turner. With Griner back in the fold, the Mercury should be a much improved team in 2021.

Griner is excited to be back with the team that drafted her and is looking forward to helping the Mercury reach the playoffs. It’s been a long road for Griner since her first stint with the Mercury, but she is ready to make an impact in 2021.
