CLEVELAND, Ohio – D’Ernest Johnson will be part of the Browns’ talented – and a little crowded – running back room again in 2022, and will have to continue to find openings in more ways than one.

Johnson, 26, and the Browns agreed to terms Saturday on a one-year deal worth up to $ 2.43 million – same as his unrestricted free agent tender amount, but the one-year deal gives him $ 900,000 in guaranteed money and lowers his cap number, a league source told cleveland.com.

The $ 2.43 million is the maximum amount of the contract if he reaches his incentives.

It means Johnson will stick around in a running back room that features Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Demetric Felton and 2022 fifth-round pick Jerome Ford. The Browns also have Hunt firmly in their plans despite the fact he’s heading into the final year of his contract with a $ 6.25 million cap hit.

But Johnson is no stranger to waiting his turn and making the most of his opportunities.

In 2021, he was given three chances to serve as the Browns’ workhorse back, and he excelled each time. The first was during the 17-14 victory over the Broncos, when he rushed for 146 yards while Chubb and Hunt were both out.

The second was in the 45-7 loss to the Patriots, in which he rushed for 99 yards; and the third was in the season-ending victory over the Bengals, when he once again supplied backup quarterback Case Keenum with a robust ground game, rushing for 123 yards.

“Chubb and I joked actually about D’Ernest’s and I’s connection more so than me and him, ” Keenum said while laughing after the victory. “I will ride with this guy any day. He is a worker. He sat at home all week [while on the reserve/COVID-19 list], showed up today for work and brought it. … He works his tail off, and he deserves everything that is coming to him. “

Johnson, who signed with the Browns as a free agent in May of 2019 after the Alliance of American Football folded, finished last season with 534 yards on 100 carries – an impressive 5.3-yard average that was second on the team only to Chubb’s 5.5 .

Johnson, who worked on a fishing boat in Florida reeling in mahi mahi before catching on with the Orlando Apollos, earned the respect last season of his teammates and coaches for his work ethic, talent and attitude.

“D’Ernest Johnson to me is a warrior and a great teammate,” coach Kevin Stefanski said after the victory over the Broncos. “What he has fought through in his career di lui and then to go have a night like that … I thought was just outstanding.”
