Logan Webb wasn’t thrilled by Giants manager Gabe Kapler’s decision to remove him from Saturday’s 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.<\/p>\n

Deep down, Webb is a competitor at heart, and when faced with a challenging situation, he wants to work his way through it. It’s an endearing quality for a pitcher and, at its simplest form, a human being.<\/p>\n

So when Webb was removed at LoanDepot Park after surrendering a leadoff single to Marlins right fielder Avisail Garcia, an RBI double to center fielder Jes\u00fas S\u00e1nchez, a single to third baseman Jon Berti and a walk to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., the 25- year-old right-hander understood the decision but certainly wasn’t happy about it. After all, the Giants still led 4-2, and Webb needed only one more out to escape the jam.<\/p>\n

Instead, John Brebbia came on and allowed a game-tying, two-run single to Garrett Cooper, and the Marlins eventually won it in the ninth on Sanchez’s sacrifice fly off Tyler Rogers.<\/p>\n

In speaking with reporters postgame, Webb’s swift and concise response to questions about the decision made his frustrations clear.<\/p>\n

Q: “Were you surprised when the manager came out with two outs in the fifth?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah.” <\/p>\n

Q: “Was there any conversation?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Nope.”<\/p>\n

Webb was asked if he was OK with Kapler’s recent trend of pulling his starters earlier in games, to which he took a moment to gather his thoughts and responded honestly.<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t pitching well, so I get it. But the competitor in me wasn’t too fond of that.”<\/p>\n

“It’s a tough question,” said Webb, who threw 87 pitches in 4 2\/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out six. “No, I didn’t want to come out of the game, I’ll just say that.”<\/p>\n

Kapler pulled Webb after his second visit to the mound that inning. Webb knew he wasn’t pitching well and, in turn, that he didn’t have much of a case to plead.<\/p>\n

“You guys know me a little bit – I like to compete, I wanted to compete, and I wasn’t pitching well, so I get it,” Webb admitted. “But the competitor in me wasn’t too fond of that. Yeah, I just wanted to keep competing.”<\/p>\n

Kapler spoke to Webb after the game, and the Giants ace’s disappointment was all-encompassing after a promising outing turned sour.<\/p>\n

“Yeah, I spoke to him,” Kapler said. “He’s disappointed, I think he’s disappointed across the board. I don’t think there’s much more to say about it than that.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t think Logan had his best stuff today. I think he’ll share that with you,” Kapler said. “… As you saw, it was difficult for him to get near the strike zone with [Jazz Chisholm], which put us in a bit of a bind because we weren’t sure if he was going to be able to continue to attack the strike zone. We felt we had really good options in the bullpen and John Brebbia, who was coming off an excellent outing from yesterday. “<\/p>\n

Minus the bullpen game in Friday’s 15-6 win over the Marlins, Giants starters have been pulled in the fifth inning or earlier in each of the last four starts.<\/p>\n

Coming off a dominant outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday in which Webb went eight innings while striking out 10 batters, Saturday’s start certainly was disappointing for a young pitcher who has been working his way through a season in which he hasn’t been his sharpest .<\/p>\n
