Obi-Wan Kenobi writer and executive producer Joby Harold revealed that the Star Wars miniseries originally planned to feature Darth Vader far earlier in the story than what ended up being depicted.

“The original incarnation of all this — Vader had appeared much earlier in the storytelling, and his name had been thrown around,” Harold said in an interview with Nerdist. “And I very much went, ‘Just slow everything down, really be patient and really build who Obi-Wan was.’ And then introduce the notion that he’s out there, to then play it, and then end on him saying, ‘Anakin.’ That word is very seismic to him by then in the audience’s minds, because they sat with him for those two episodes. Then you get to cut to the bacta tank and all that. “

Unlike what was originally planned for the series, Obi-Wan Kenobi revealed that the lead character was completely unaware of Anakin’s survival after Revenge of the Sith, or of Vader’s new role as the Empire’s most elite Jedi hunter. Harold explained that he really wanted to see this revelation played out onscreen. “The notion that [Obi-Wan] doesn’t know, it’s a great card to play, so why not play it live? “Harold said.” Why not watch Ewan [McGregor] do it? Why not see him realize and then, and only then show the audience the character? “

In the final version of the series airing now on Disney +, Darth Vader does not appear until the very end of the second episode. This closing scene of Vader in the bacta tank features the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker after nearly 20 years away from the role. In describing his return of him to the franchise and to the character, Christensen called it a “no-brainer”. He even went as far as to express interest in returning for a potential Darth Vader spinoff series.

Joining Christensen in the role of Darth Vader is series veteran James Earl Jones. The 91-year-old actor originated the voice role of Vader all the way back in In New Hope in 1977. While Christensen himself has been confirmed to be returning for months, Jones’ involvement was unconfirmed until Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s third episode aired.
