Three-star Lexington (Ky.) Frederick Douglass defensive lineman Jamarrion Harkless verbally committed to Illinois on Sunday following an official visit to Illinois. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound prospect chose the Illini over a loaded offer list that included Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Purdue, Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Carolina and West Virginia.

The Illini were Harkless’ second power-five offer, but during the next week some of college football’s powerhouses offered the quick, powerful, disruptive defensive lineman. But Illinois hosted him for an unofficial visit in April and quickly got him back on campus for his first official visit. He also was scheduled to take an official visit to Louisville in late June.

247Sports ranks Harkless the No. 69 defensive line prospect in the Class of 2023 and the No. 5 overall prospect in Kentucky. Illinois linebackers coach Andy Buh and Illinois defensive line coach Terrance Jamison led the Illinois push for Harkless.

Illinois has so far earned three commitments on Sunday following its first official visit weekend of the 2023 recruiting cycle, upping its class to seven total commitments.

Harkless said of Illinois in April: “As soon as I came [for an unofficial visit], that’s the most love I got so far. I could tell they really want me, so I was like, ‘Let’s go ahead and lock this in.’

“The facility is beautiful, by far the biggest one I’ve seen. The weight room is ginormous. It’s ridiculous. I can definitely feel they’re going to get you right there. “

What it means: Harkless is a massive get for the Illini in the Class of 2023. He not only addresses a huge need, but he is very talented and has the size, power and burst to be a disruptive presence on the defensive presence, likely at the nose, and a potential next-level talent. After missing out on in-state priority Roderick Pierce (Wisconsin), St. Louis native Tyler Gant (Northwestern) and New Jersey native Dante Barone (Rutgers), Harkless is a headline addition to this class and a potential future linchpin of the defensive line. He has the potential to play early in his career and has as high of a ceiling as any of the Illini’s commits thus far.
