The two major storylines of the 49ers offseason could be barreling to a conclusion as the team begins mandatory minicamp in Santa Clara on Tuesday.

Deebo Samuel, the stud receiver who requested a trade for reasons that remain as unclear as they were six weeks ago, will report to the first day of mandatory workouts, according to multiple reports.

Samuel first asked out back in April; simultaneous reports in the spring suggested that he was unhappy with both his contract and frequent usage di lui as a running back. But the Niners stood pat, turning down a trade offer from the Jets that included the No. 10 pick in the draft. “I’d be a fool to trade him,” general manager John Lynch said last week. He was right, and it appears he may not be a fool at all in this case.

The Deebo drama isn’t over yet, but it seems closer to completion than the Jimmy Garoppolo snafu. The team excused its highly paid backup QB from this week’s three-day mandatory minicamp, allowing him to continue to rehab from offseason shoulder surgery on his own. (Players who skip mandatory workouts can be fined by their teams if not excused.)
