After Cam Newton served as the starting quarterback in the 2020 campaign and the three 2021 preseason games for New England, the Patriots released the former NFL MVP in the final roster cut to go with rookie Mac Jones as their signal-caller last season.

In an appearance on “The Pivot Podcast” this week, Newton shared his assessment of Jones, and there were no sour grapes involved.

Jones’ name came up when Newton and one of the podcast’s hosts, former NFL linebacker Channing Crowder, debated the former Auburn All-American’s NFL future.

Newton remains unsigned after playing in eight games with the Carolina Panthers last season. While acknowledging he couldn’t be viewed now as one of the top QBs in the NFL, Newton maintained he would be a better option than some of the quarterbacks slated to be starters in 2022.

Crowder contended that NFL decision-makers didn’t think that, as illustrated by Newton’s current free-agent status, and Newton asked Crowder to rank the starting quarterbacks, beginning at No. 32 and moving up. Crowder said he thought the quarterbacks on the lower rungs would be youngsters seeking to get established in the league such as Jones and the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa, who are both former Alabama All-Americans.

Newton said Crowder’s assessment was off-target.

“I was with Mac Jones,” Newton said. “Mac Jones is going to be a great quarterback. I would put Mac Jones at that twenty-ish threshold. He’s a young gun. Obviously with the guys that they’re going to build around him from the defense, special teams, offensive side, he’s not the guy that I’m talking about.

“Tua just got some key acquisitions. I’m not talking about Tua. “

The Panthers selected Newton with the first choice in the 2011 NFL Draft after he won the 2010 Heisman Trophy and sparked Auburn to an undefeated season and the BCS national championship. Carolina won three of the six division titles in the franchise’s history with Newton at quarterback, including in the 2015 season, when the Panthers reached the Super Bowl and Newton won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award.

Newton became Carolina’s all-time passing leader and set the NFL career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback while with the Panthers. But Newton played in only two games in 2019 because of a foot injury, Carolina released Newton in 2020 with a year remaining on his contract.

After signing with the Patriots in July 2020, Newton started 15 games for New England that season. The Patriots re-signed Newton in the offseason last year, then used the 15th choice in the 2020 NFL Draft to obtain Jones.
