It’s been well documented that Ryan Fitzpatrick loved his time with the Buffalo Bills from 2009-2012.

Fitzpatrick has gone on record to say that Buffalo is his favorite football city and that the fans understood him and he understood the passionate Bills Mafia fan base.

Considering how much he loved Buffalo, there was some thought that Fitzpatrick could return to the Bills this offseason to serve as Josh Allen’s backup. Fitzpatrick, however, would not entertain the idea.

Why?

He didn’t want Allen to get “Fitzpatricked.”

Throughout his career, Fitzpatrick was signed by other teams to serve as the backup when injuries or other circumstances would lead to him getting the starting job. The veteran told Trey Wingo that he did not want to see that pattern continue in 2022.

“If you just trace my career arc and you trace some of it I was signed to be a starter or bridge and that happened toward the tail end of my career,” Fitzpatrick told Wingo. “But a lot of the places I started as the backup and there was some crazy circumstance of why the starter got hurt.”

“Geno (Smith) breaks his jaw,” Fitzpatrick said as one example. “There’s a million different things happening that just kept happening. And I will tell you this. I haven’t really said this to anybody. I didn’t want to sign with the Bills as the backup I love Josh Allen. And I love watching Josh Allen play football. And if I signed to be a backup with the Buffalo Bills … What’s happened the rest of my career? I end up on the field. I don’t want to end up on the field! I don’t want to play on the field. I want to see Josh Allen play so that was one where it was like, ‘No. I love watching this kid too much. ‘ I’ve seen this story happen over and over and over again. ‘”

Wingo used the term “Fitzpatricked” to describe the injuries that led to the quarterback starting all over the league.

Fitzpatrick wasn’t kidding about a curse of sorts following him whenever he signed.

In addition to the broken jaw that Smith suffered at the hands of his teammate, IK Enemkpali, Fitzpatrick saw other injuries lead to him getting playing time thoughout his career.

With the Rams, both Marc Bulger and Jamie Martin suffered injuries which paved the way to him getting playing time. In Cincinnati, a sore elbow to Carson Palmer led to him receiving multiple starts. In Buffalo, Fitzpatrick first got onto the field due to an injury to Trent Edwards. He was later named the starting QB by interim head coach Perry Fewell. An injury to Jake Locker gave him the starting job in Tennessee and after he lost his starting gig in Houston, Fitzpatrick got the job back after Ryan Mallett tore his pectoral muscle. Fitzpatrick also started in Tampa Bay after a Jameis Winston injury and would go on to start in 2018 due to Winston receiving a suspension.

Although the Bills Mafia would have loved to have seen Fitzpatrick in a Bills jersey once again it seems as though he had the team’s best interests in mind by never entertaining the idea.
