SAN DIEGO – The Mets lost two of their starting position players on Tuesday night, including arguably their most valuable player of the early season, when Pete Alonso and Starling Marte left a game against the Padres due to injury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

San Diego starter Yu Darvish hit three of the first five Mets batters, including Alonso, who took a 96 mph sinker off his right hand as he attempted to check his swing during a second-inning plate appearance. Alonso immediately dropped to the ground in pain and came off the field without hesitation. He proceeded to the clubhouse, presumably for an X-ray, the results of which were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Half an inning later, Mars left the game. He had come up limping after being caught stealing in the opening moments of the game. Although Mars returned to play defense for the bottom of the first, he walked slowly off the field after that inning and did not return for the second.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Mets can ill afford an extended absence from either player, but particularly not Alonso, their most prolific run producer over the first third of the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Appearing in each of the Mets’ first 57 games, Alonso had a slash line of .282 \/ .360 \/ .546. His 16 homers of him were tied for the National League lead, while his 54 RBIs were tops in the Majors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

JD Davis, who started at first base Monday for the first time since 2018, replaced Alonso as a pinch-runner and took over at first. The Mets recently demoted Dominic Smith to Triple-A Syracuse, but he would be a candidate to return if Alonso misses time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Shortly thereafter, Mark Canha replaced Mars in right field. Following a slow start, Marte had caught fire in recent weeks, hitting .313 with 15 extra-base hits in 30 games since the start of May.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
