Poor Rodolfo Castro. The Pirates infielder had been back in the majors for exactly three innings when he briefly became a household name among furious Facebook posters across the country.

Chugging from first to third on an Oneil Cruz single, Castro dove headfirst into third base. When he popped up, he was greeted by a smirking umpire who was pointing at the ground. Castro’s phone had flown out of his pocket in the slide.

Castro was sheepish about it after the 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks, saying that he didn’t remember putting the phone in his pocket, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“I just remember getting dressed, putting my pants on, getting something to eat, using the restroom. Never did it ever cross my mind that I still had my cellphone on me,” Castro said. pad in my pocket, never felt my phone, and just went out there and what happened, happened. To be honest with you, I don’t think there’s any professional ballplayer that would ever even go out there with any intentions of taking a cellphone … It’s horrible that it happened to me. Obviously, it was very unintentional.”

Manager Derek Shelton was in the unenviable position of having to explain that no, the woeful Pirates aren’t running the world’s worst cheating scheme. “I’m sure we’ll hear from the league, but I feel like everybody, including the umpires — which, again, they handled it great — it was a young kid who made a mistake and put his phone in his pocket,” Shelton said. “There was no intent to use it or do anything with it.”
