By this time next week, the Detroit Tigers will likely have five or six new faces – or, more accurately, old faces – on the roster.

The moves could start as early as Tuesday, when the Tigers open a brief two-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

Outfielder Austin Meadows, on the injured list with vertigo symptoms since May 16, is expected to be activated for the series against his old team.

Although he had yet to hit a home run in 116 plate appearances, Meadows had been one of the Tigers’ most productive offensive players, posting a .709 OPS (112 OPS +) with 12 walks and 14 strikeouts.

To make room for Meadows, the Tigers would likely option infielder / outfielder Kody Clemens back to Triple-A Toledo. Clemens has gone 0-for-12 since being called up to make his Major League debut.

There’s also a chance that third baseman Jeimer Candelario could go on the injured list after leaving Sunday’s game in New York when he hurt his shoulder while diving for a ball. In that case, Clemens would probably stick around to split third base duties with Harold Castro.

Outfielder Robbie Grossman, placed on the IL one week ago with neck stiffness, should start a rehab assignment this week and be back in Detroit by the weekend.

On the pitching front, left-hander Tyler Alexander could be back this week. He’s now expected to work out of the bullpen, although it’s not clear whose job he would take.

Two more pitchers probably won’t be back this week, but could be just around the corner: Right-handed reliever Jose Cisnero, who’s been on the IL since spring training; and lefty starter Eduardo Rodriguez, out for the last two-and-half weeks with a rib cage sprain.

Then there’s Riley Greene, who was injured days before Opening Day and is currently assigned to Triple-A Toledo. He’s logged six games and 29 plate appearances with the Mud Hens.

Mid-June originally seemed like a good guess for Greene’s arrival date. But a spate of injuries and lack of production from the outfield might cause the Tigers to move up that timeline if Greene continues to show that he is ready.
