Giants kicker Graham Gano was connecting on all his field goals at the end of Wednesday’s practice, but the last one, from 53 yards out, was the only one his teammates really cared about. He made that one too.

The entire team celebrated. Gano got carried off the field. If he had missed, the entire team (coaches included) would’ve had to run.

“That was pretty neat,” Gano said after practice at ended.

It was sensical capper to wound what wound up being a very light practice for the Giants, the second of three minicamp sessions before the team breaks for the summer. The Giants only conducted one live 11-on-11 team period, and then for the last 30 (or so) minutes of practice, they essentially ran a walkthrough without helmets.

But alas, there was still plenty to observe.

Here are observations from Wednesday’s practice:

Offensive bounce-back?

The defense dominated in Tuesday’s practice. There wasn’t much opportunity for an encore on Wednesday, but the offense did look better. The offense scored a few touchdowns during the live 11-on-11 period, including another on a pass from Daniel Jones to Saquon Barkley.

It’s been said many times in the spring already, but Barkley clearly is going to be a significant part of the passing offense in 2022.

“He’s got good hands, he’s a good route runner, a good runner,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said before practice. “Try to use him the best way we can.”

Overall, Jones completed three of his five passing attempts, with the other two going to rookie wideout Wan’Dale Robinson. Defensive lineman Leonard Williams also batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

Play of the day

Not many to choose from on a light day, but Tyrod Taylor had one of his best throws of the spring on a fade to wide receiver Richie James, who seems to have emerged as a legitimate option to make the team – possibly at the expense of someone like Darius Slayton.

One of the strangest developments in OTAs and minicamp has been that – even with Kadarius Toney, Kenny Golladay and Sterling Shepard all sidelined – Slayton hasn’t been running with the first-team offense. Ahead of him: David Sills, CJ Board and James.

As for James: The former 49ers wideout has the advantage of also contributing as a returner, and he’s had a solid spring overall, getting a lot of work in the slot. He had six catches during 11-on-11 on Tuesday too.

“He’s got quickness. He has the ability to play inside and outside, Daboll said. “We’ve put him really in all three spots or four spots when we’re going with four wide receivers. I think the quarterbacks can read his body language about him. He has good hands, he knows what to do, dependable. So he’s been a good addition for us. “

Kadarius Toney, ripped

Toney remains sidelined with a knee injury, but he at least looks physically impressive. Toney caught some passes on the JUGs machine before practice for the second straight day, and then during the latter part of practice he did a ropes exercise. He has barely participated in practice in the spring due to the injury – a familiar sentiment – and the Giants can only hope he shows up to training camp in good shape too.

Kenny Golladay, working

Of the Toney, Golladay and Shepard trio, Golladay appears to be the closest to being a full-go. He’s still not participating in team drills but was running routes and participating in various drills on Wednesday. It’s unclear what his injury di lui is, but he should be good to go for training camp at the end of July.

Miscellaneous

• Third-string QB Davis Webb connected with wide receiver Keelan Doss on a nice pass down the field during 7-on-7 drills. Doss was practicing with the Giants for the second straight day even though he hasn’t technically signed with the team, though perhaps it’s trending in that direction based on his two-day tryout di lui. Webb also connected with wide receiver Collin Johnson – limited by an injury – for a touchdown during the live 11-on-11 drills.

• Tight end Ricky Seals-Jones appears to have tumbled down the depth chart. The last two days, both fourth-round pick Daniel Bellinger and undrafted rookie Austin Allen have been getting most of the first-team reps ahead of him. Daboll downplayed that before practice – “I always tell these guys we have a rep chart, not a depth chart right now,” he said. – but it doesn’t bode well for Seals-Jones’ chances of making the team.

Bellinger has been impressive for most of OTAs and minicamp, though he did drop a pass from Daniel Jones during 7-on-7 drills.

• General manager Joe Schoen had a special guest at Wednesday’s practice: Superfan Sam Prince, who went viral for his energetic announcement that the Giants picked Kayvon Thibodeaux at this year’s draft. He watched practice from the sideline, and met a few players after practice including Gano and Evan Neal.
