{"id":43618,"date":"2022-06-09T16:35:50","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T16:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/metas-349-dual-camera-smartwatch-canceled-still-leaks-out\/"},"modified":"2022-06-09T16:35:50","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T16:35:50","slug":"metas-349-dual-camera-smartwatch-canceled-still-leaks-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/metas-349-dual-camera-smartwatch-canceled-still-leaks-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta&#8217;s $ 349 dual-camera smartwatch canceled, still leaks out"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p>For the past two years, Meta&#8217;s Reality Labs hardware division has been working on a smartwatch that was just canceled this week, though not before extensive details fully leaked out.<\/p>\n<p>Revealed by <em>Bloomberg<\/em> today, this Android-powered Meta smartwatch is a rounded square with iPhone 12\/13-esque side rails that are quite thick with long pill-shaped and circular buttons.<\/p>\n<p>Cameras serve as the defining feature with a 5-megapixel front-facer and 12-megapixel one on the back that&#8217;s accessed by removing the watch from the frame that bands attach to.  The rear-facer caused some design issues with Meta&#8217;s goal of using wearables as an input method for AR glasses:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The second camera was designed so users could remove the watch face from its strap to quickly take pictures.  But the presence of the camera caused issues with another feature for translating nerve signals from the wrist into digital commands, the person said.  Having that technical ability, known as electromyography, is a top priority for Meta. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This frame design is not all too different from 2016&#8217;s Fitbit Blaze.  Battery life is said to be rated at 18 hours, like the Apple Watch, with Wi-Fi, GPS, and cellular (eSIM) connectivity.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fitbit Blaze: How To Charge Your Tracker\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/df0H1pgv1zI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>We see one watch face picture today, and <em>Bloomberg<\/em> notes the presence of a \u201clock screen\u201d and notification center.  Available applications include \u201cSpotify, WhatsApp, Instagram Stories, daily activity tracking, workouts, the photo gallery, heart rate monitoring, calendar, settings, and breathing,\u201d though there&#8217;s no on-device store. <\/p>\n<p>Codenamed Milan, this watch would have launched in spring 2023 and was targeting $ 349.  It would have launched well after the Pixel Watch, Samsung&#8217;s next wearable, other Wear OS 3 devices, and the next-generation Apple Watch.<\/p>\n<p>Meta told employees working on the project this week that it would not be released, but the company is still developing &#8220;multiple other wrist-worn devices,&#8221; according to <em>Bloomberg<\/em>.
