\n<\/aside>\nThe long-running daytime talk show \u201cDr. Phil\u201d conducted a round of layoffs ahead of its upcoming season this fall, a spokesperson for the show confirmed on Friday.<\/p>\n
The cost-cutting move affected about 25 workers, most of which worked in production roles for the talk show, the \u201cDr. Phil\u201d spokesperson said, adding the show had \u201cstreamlined production to ensure longevity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs is typical of this process there were some roles we discovered that we could reduce yet still deliver our dynamic, forward-thinking program,\u201d the spokesperson said in a statement to The Post.<\/p>\n
Variety was first to report on the layoffs.<\/p>\n
The pink slips were dispersed months after of a toxic workplace environment rocked \u201cDr. Phil,\u201d the show named for its eponymous host, Dr. Phil McGraw.<\/p>\n
A report from Buzzfeed News detailed from a dozen current and former employees who said they \u201cexperienced verbal abuse in workplace that fosters intimidation, and racism\u201d while on set. Seven of the workers who spoke to the outlet also said that guests appearing on the show are \u201cmanipulated and treated unethically.\u201d<\/p>\nThe layoffs mostly targeted staffers working in production on the show.<\/figcaption>NBCU Photo Bank\/NBCUniversal via<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cEveryone was just pretty miserable. You would walk into the building and there was just a palpable dread and anxiety,\u201d one former employee told the outlet at the time. \u201cDr. Phil \u2014 the show about mental health where everybody who works on it has terrible mental health because our work conditions were really bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another ex-worker said the show’s summer hiatus was their only reprieve and that they \u201cwould have nightmares\u201d about the job.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would literally be working in my sleep and have nightmares about something being wrong or not turning in something the right way,\u201d the former employee said. \u201cEven when I quit, I had to go to therapy for it, which is crazy because you’re working for a therapist.\u201d<\/p>\nAbout 25 workers were impacted by the layoffs.<\/figcaption>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMcGraw was not personally implicated in any wrongdoing on set. Instead, the staffers said the show’s top producers were responsible for the toxic culture.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for \u201cDr. Phil\u201d denied the in Buzzfeed’s report, referring to them as a \u201cclick-bait story\u201d containing \u201cverifiably and objectively false characterizations and reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDr. Phil\u201d will debut its 21st season in September on CBS. The show is currently set to air through at least May 2023.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
