The Georgia Bulldogs continue to work through fall camp in preparation for the 2022 season. That work included a big checkpoint Saturday, when the Bulldogs had their first scrimmage of camp.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spoke to the media Saturday afternoon shortly after the Bulldogs finished their scrimmage in Sanford Stadium, which was their ninth of 25 practices in the lead-up to the start of the season. Smart shared insight on what he saw from the scrimmage on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs, which have all eyes on them after winning the national championship back in January.

Georgia opens its season on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a showdown against Oregon in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. As of Saturday, the Bulldogs stand 20 days away from the season opener with the understanding there’s still more to be done before kickoff finally arrives.

If there was any concern about complacency within Georgia’s program after winning it all, Smart dispelled such thoughts when asked about it back at SEC Media Days in July.

“I’m not wired that way. I’m worried to worry the day after the game to worry about who we were going to sign,” Smart said. “I kind of told our team when we came back, I said, ‘Look, guys, I believe in these mind tricks where when people tell you something, it triggers something. Every time someone tells me congrats on the national championship — and there have been a gazillion of those — I tell myself each week, this week I’m going to call three more recruits. Next week, I’m going to think about what we can do on third down better.’ I tell our players when you hear that comment, you need to think about what have you done today to be better for tomorrow. It just triggers my brain to go somewhere else. My brain has been somewhere else a lot because of that because we’ve gotten a lot of that.”

Below is what Smart had to say in full following Saturday’s scrimmage.
