Auburn held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday evening at Jordan-Hare Stadium, as preseason competition really ramps up for the Tigers ahead of their season opener Sept. 3 against Mercer.

It was the Tigers’ first practice inside the stadium this preseason, and it should help provide some separation in the quarterback competition, as head coach Bryan Harsin has said he’d like to begin whittling things down after the first scrimmage of camp.

Harsin met with reporters after the scrimmage to recap the first week-plus of fall camp. Below is a quick recap of Harsin’s remarks:

BRYAN HARSIN

— Situational scrimmage with some live work tonight. Effort was good, but execution “will improve.”

— Got a lot of players in there, gave guys opportunities. He thought team handled it well. Effort was impressive, but urgency can still improve.

— Damari Alston and Camden Brown both stood out. Brown had a touchdown reception.

— John Samuel Shenker also had a touchdown reception.

— All quarterbacks did some good things. TJ Finley “operated well tonight” and had a nice 14-play opening drive. Robby Ashford did well “making some plays and operating the huddle.” Zach Calzada was “solid.”

— Anders Carlson made all four of his field goal attempts.

— Quarterbacks did not go live, but Derick Hall and Eku Leota had a couple sacks combined. Well, they were credited for them anyway.

— Craig McDonald had a 95-yard scoop-and-score for a touchdown to end the scrimmage.

— They’ll start “diving a little bit more into the depth chart” ahead of the second scrimmage. No decisions will be made just yet.

— Team will have Monday off after reviewing movie tomorrow. Classes start Tuesday.

— Second scrimmage is on Friday. That’s when things will get narrowed down with the two-deep.

— TJ’s command of the offense has been solid. He picks things up quickly, conceptionally, and recalls finer details easily. “He’s got a really good understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish, and I appreciate that.” Tonight, he executed well in some critical moments, but the quarterbacks overall could stand to improve on some of the easier throws.

— Jayson Jones and Jeffrey M’ba have come along well on the defensive line. So has Morris Joseph Jr., who “has some subtleness to him.”

— Keionte Scott “is going to be a guy for us” in the secondary.

— Harsin says it was good to see Owen Pappoe back out there in action after last year’s injury.

— On Damari Alston: “He’s just got a good feel for… when the play opens up, to hit it, and when the play’s breaking down, he knows what to do.” He had some good burst tonight and overall looked like he was getting into a groove more so than anyone else. Tank Bigsby ran “powerful tonight,” as well.

— Offensive line was “solid,” but needs to do a better job getting some push. Good run lanes were created, but he wants to watch the film to get a better assessment of the offensive line.

— The fumble at the end of practice, Harsin said, was on the O-line.

— “There’s some” separation at quarterback, but he wants to review the movie from tonight. Decisions are looming. Harsin has kept a keen eye on the position, not just with the throws and accuracy but how each guy has operated the offense from whistle to whistle.

— The No. 1 thing Harsin wanted to see from the QBs tonight was “to lead.”

— On Camden Brown: He’s a young player “that’s catching our eye.” Ja’Varrius Johnson and Shedrick Jackson have also stood out as playmakers, but he lauds the entire group for its progress under Ike Hilliard. “There’s been very few issues out of that group.”

— On the tweet with a photo of him and Bruce Pearl: “Timing’s everything, right?”

— Eugene Asante has come on strong this fall after missing significant time in the spring due to the death of his father. Freshman Robert Woodyard is also coming along. “I’ve been really impressed with our linebackers.”

— Tate Johnson and Avery Jernigan both got some work with the first-team offensive line tonight. “Both those guys have really come on and done some positive things.” Brenden Coffey is “starting to shine” and things are beginning to click; he’s bouncing between tackle and guard.

— On the secondary: “We can move, now. The communication on the back end has been good.”
